What is this stuff

My friend is having a problem with writing anything on her computer when she is online. Everytime she opens a dialog box (search, email, etc.) before she can write anything in some sort of chat and symbols start scrolling instead. We installed new antivirus software and ran that but it came up with nothing. Also did a clean up ( defrag, scan disk, deleted unwanted/needed items) and that didn't help. What is this? Also she has a program that works at start up that hasn't been working for about 6 weeks. Thank-you for any help!

If possible tell her to download Spybot Search and Destroy try installing it, updating the definitions, and then run it and remove the spyware(not this may cause some programs that have spyware in them to stop working).

She ended up switching to a cable modem and the guy that helped her set it up figured it out (after 2 visits). She has a dictation program that she had never used and somehow it was turned on. Because she never set it up (for her voice) it was running everything and background noise became symbols. Thanks for the advice, we did try that.
