View Full Version : Norton AntiVirus 2001 causes trouble for Win 95/98, Danish versions !

Well, now I've at least found out that I'm not the only one having trouble.......

Just found an article on the Danish homepage PC World Online (http://www.pcworld.dk/), posted Aug. 7th, 10.24 local time (morning).
In the article it is stated that the latest update for NAV 2001 has caused Danish versions of Win 95 and Win 98 to crash or freeze. The problems occur when you use Internet Explorer, especially when you try to look at websites using javascripts. (I can supply with the fact that using MS Outlook also can give a lot of trouble!!!)

Symantec Denmark has NOT given any information to the users, neither on their homepage, nor by e-mail.
They say that they're working to find a fix......

Well - that's it, folks!
Using antivirus can sometimes be worse than getting a virus.....

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

NAV kept crashing my WIN98 as well, so it's not just a Danish problem :) :) :)

Thanks for getting back to us Lotte. I spent some time in Germany in 1957 thru 1959, and Copenhagen was our favorte place to go on leave.

I am a bit surprised that symantec has been a bit slow answering the E-Mail. Or did I misread that, and they did answer you in a timely fashion but didn't give you much satisfaction as to finding a fix. I was using Norton Anti-Virus 5, but I dropped that when they started charging a suscription price for updates. Not that the price was that much, but it was just an annoyance to have to try to renew each year, and I do not like to give out any information on the internet.

Keep in touch with their website, and make sure you suscribe to their newsletter. They sometimes post things in there you might be interested in.

We can't help but remember some of the Great Danes, you exported to us.

Danny Kaye
Victor Borge, just to name a few.

Or to the thousands of Jews who would not even had been born had it not been for the Danish Underground during WWII.

Sorry, for being a bit off topic but I think it needed to be said.

;)

Hello Johnny,
according to Symantec there have been no reports about NAV crashing Windows out of Denmark - at least not this particular update. So I'd like to know: Has this happened during the last week - or was it earlier?

Hello Rusty,
actually I posted my question for Symantec Tech Support on Monday morning, but I didn't get an answer by e-mail until late Tuesday afternoon. By then I had used several hours on Friday, Monday and Tuesday to find a solution, thinking that it had to be MY computer. Then it turned out that I was not the only one - but not a word about it on Symantec's websites - not even on their Danish site.....Too bad, I think, 'cause be then they MUST have know that something was wrong (many users have contacted them, I've learned).
I AM subscribed to their newsletter - there's been nothing in them concerning this problem.

Thanks for your kind words about Denmark, Copenhagen and the Danes. :)
It's always good to hear such things!

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that we are still waiting to hear something from Symantec about their forthcoming update, due to August 8th (today!) from what I've heard.....Will post back to tell news, when I have some....

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

Hiya Lotte,
Well, around 3 weeks ago I downloaded a trial version of NAV '01 complete with autoupdates etc. but my machine kept freezing or crashing so after a couple of days I uninstalled it.
p.s. thanks for Carlsberg as well

UPDATE FOR THE INTERESTED:
It's confirmed that there have been problems with NAV 2001 and Win ME Danish version, and also a Danish user of an English version has had some trouble.
A workaround from Symantec Denmark has not had quite the expected effect, as it does not work for all of us (I couldn't even download the file...).
Now Symantec expects that they will have a solution on August 9th (today) before noon (Danish time). Well, we'll see.....

Hi Johnny,
don't know about the trial version of NAV 2001, but I can tell you so much that my (properly bought!) version has worked perfectly well - that is, until the morning of Friday last week (Danish time).....
Oh yes, both Carlsberg and Tuborg are great.....though they now are one and the same brewery.... :D

Hi Rusty,
glad to see that you remember the Danish beers.... :D

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

could it be that this also applied to NAV 2000?

far as I know, these updates are either selective by the update engine, or a single large file for distributed updates covering a slew of their products)
(I usually download the distributable update)

now, update sometimes installes an update on the update engine as well...

in any case, I had my fill of freezes on one puter, yet have no problems on another.
I'm running a DUTCH version of NAV 2000 on this machine, and the other has just been reformatted.

(mind you, on the misbehaving machine I too I suspect it to be a hardware issue of sorts, since it was a newly built machine. It's currently being set up again, and I hope I finally fixed it...)

in any case, thanks for telling me about it.

question remains, would it only be on certain versions... and certain versions of OS...
cuz that's strange.

UPDATE:
Symantec has finally found the solution! The latest update of the virus defs will do the trick.
Have now via LiveUpdate downloaded this, and everything works. HOORAYYYY !!!

Now another question rises:
What went wrong ???? - Perhaps we'll never know....

Hi Jaak,
YES, it's possible that the problem has struck NAV 2000 as well.
In the press release on Symantec Denmark's website they write: "Symantec has now released updates that solve the problems concerning Norton AntiVirus and Danish versions of Windows." - As they do not specify the NAV version, one could assume that the problems have not only occured with NAV 2001, but also other versions.
The OS versions that are know to have had troubles are Win 95, 98, and ME - the Danish versions. I've seen one person reporting trouble with a UK version of Win ME.
On Symantec Nederland Homepage I can see no articles/releases/anything else about any problems in the Netherlands. Perhaps you should contact them??

Now I've solved my problems - I hope that you can get your problems solved, Jaak.

Kind regards,
Lotte G., Denmark

updated this morning, but saw no problems with the update I did earleir this week

problem on other machine is STILL unresolved, and it hasn't even got antivirus yet
(its off line, no modem, not network.)

I need get to the heart of this problem.
gonna flash its BIOS
it already has a US$ 35 copper (could be brass or bronze) cooler on it.
(with something which I think is silver paste)

in BIOS, cannot set alert level, only fan alert on/off... gonna have to install the HWmonitor, which output I don't trust whatsoever, and uses resources I rather not waste on it, but it would indicate at least something...)

Dammit, I thought I had it fixed.
I also suspect the via updates ...

anyway, that's my problem, not yours, ain't it?
First Atlon I built and it's a mess.
already have a duron to put in, so as to see if mobo is being stressed (chipset can be stressed too)

Thanks for the update Lotte. I for one was very much interested, as I have always advised others, that Norton (Symantec) gave excellent on line service, and they were usually quick to respond to your E-Mail regarding problems.

Surprised to hear that now Carlsberg and Tuborg are living in the same house. They are both good beers, however, I did prefer Tuborg.

could all be interbrew...

I either had luck in the update before last being different than Lotte's, or had luck in that 2000 maybe ain't affected.

I would have to look at the dates of the older AV defnition sets in explorer...
program files\common files\symantec shared\ virusdefs

before the current 20010808.016
I had 20010805.008 and 20010725.005
