My CD-Rom Drive will not recognize a CD when ;I insert it,this problem started when I was ripping Cd's to Windows Media Player,,I closed the WMP & inserted my Windows 98se disk,& got the same results,would appreciate any help that might be available.

How oldis the drive? Have you had any problems in the recent past where the drive would fail to recognize a CD every now and then? In my experiences, when a CD drive is on the verge of dying this problem will arise sporadically then all of a sudden one day it's gone for good.

I do not know the age of the drive,I bought it as a reconditioned computer,it is an HP 1999 desk top.I have had no trouble with it until this mishap.

I think something happened to the first part of your post? What exactly is the problem?

My CD_ROM Drive doesn't recognize CD's when I insert them,when I try to start them manually I receive the Message,device is not ready.

I Had ripped several CD's to Windows Media Player,A couple of days later when I tried another one the CD-Rom drive would not adknowledge the CD,& when I tried to do it manually,received the message that the drive was not ready,even tried my Windows 98 Cd,but to no avail,thought it might be a problem with WMP,& down loaded Real Player,but got the same results,Myj computer is a Hewlit Packard DeskTop,1999 model.Thanks for your interest.
