DEFRAG PROBLEM

Recently I attemped to defragment my C drive on my Windows 98 system. The defrag procedure begins, the chart indicates that it's 1% to 3% complete -- then it just runs and runs and runs. The completion bar returns to O% and it just continues to run. After an hour our so, I shut it off. What's up???

I would run defrag in Safe mode or press [crtl][alt][delete] and close all programs except Explorer and then run defrag.

How to Run Defrag in Safemode

Theoran--Thank you; I tried C/A/D and End Task on all but Explorer--no change when I attempted to run defrag.
I then rebooted, held CONT key, went to SAFE MODE then entered Defrag. I ran for a short perior of time, chart got to 10%, then same thing-did not continue. In fact, the CPU/C drive sounded like is was in a loop, working but no results. Any further thoughts.

You probably have something running in the background or there could be errors in the file system.

Try this:

-Boot into Safe Mode as suggested above.
-Right click on the desktop and set the screensaver to <none>
-Click on Close

-Click on Start>Find>Files or Folders
-Type the following in the dialogue box:
*.tmp,*.temp,*.old,*.bak,~.*
-Click on Find Now
-Click on Edit>Select All
-Click on File>Delete and choose yes when Windows warns that such and such a file is a program etc.
-Close the search window and double click on the Recycle Bin>Empty Recycle Bin

-double click on "My Computer"
-Left click on drive C:
-Right click on Drive C:
-Select "Tools"
-Select"Check Disk for Errors"
-Click on "Advanced"
-Set "Crossed-Linked Files" to "Delete"
-Set "Lost File Fragments" to "Delete"
-Select "OK"
-Select "Start"
-Select "Close" after ScanDisk completes.

-Open Disk Defragmenter
-Ignore any message that says you do not need to defragment this drive and select "Run Defragmenter"

I'm glad everything has worked out for you guys.

**Just a little pointer**

Run DEFRAG at least once a week to keep your system running smoothly, and run scan disk once a month to fix any errors or lost clusters.
