Windows 95
Advantage - None
Disadvantage - No longer supported by Microsoft, may have problms with newer hardware

Windows 98
Advantage - DOS friendly
Disadvantage - Soon to be discontinued from Microsoft Support

Windows ME
Advantage - DOS friendly, still supported by Microsoft
Disadvantage - Unstable, Microsoft admits it is the worst OS they have released to date

Windows NT
Advantage - Highly stable
Disadvantage - If still supported by Microsoft, it will not be for much longer, lacks a lot of functions of Windows 98/Me/XP

Windows 2000
Advantage - Very stable in most cases
Disadvantage - Software conflicts

Windows XP
Advantage - User friendly, highly stable in most cases, more customizable, no such thing as BSOD unless you do something really stupid
Disadvantage - Have to activate OS with Microsoft

Obviously these are not all of the advantages and disadvantages, not to mention this is all based on my experiences, not actual fact.

As for Mac OS's I haven't used a MAC since about 1983 and it was an Apple Comodore 64.

Linux, there's so many to choose from. Mandrake is supposed to be one of the easiest to learn, Slackware and Redhat are more popular. Adavantages to any Linux OS, not many virii affect Linux, customizeable doesn't even begin to describe it, extremely versatile. As for Linux disadvantages, none really beyond learning how to use a Linux OS.

Hope this helps you a little and someone else should be along eventualy with their opinions.

Well here are my opinions:
Windows 95- Out of date, some software may not run on it

Windows 98- It is getting out of date in my opinion, but I still use it.

Windows Me- I have heard many bad storys about ME and crashing. I have seen one lady get so mad at ME she decided to switch to something else (I forget if she went to 98 or 2000)

Mac OS- If you are a gamer, you'll probably want to stick with windows although there are some games for Macs.

Those are just my opinions, other will disagree.
