Office2k user profile issue

I have just re-built my computer - A brand new disk and a
clean install of W2K (Sp4) and Office 2K (Sp3).
I've set up 4 user profiles (Power Users) for each of the
family members, however now when they try to run
Word/Excel they get the following :

"Office Error 1706 - No valid source could be found for
the product Microsift Office SR-1 Premium. The Windows
installer could not continue"

Word or Excel does open for them and they can open/edit
documents etc, but I want to get rid of the error message
coming up.
Can anybody help please??

Hi rodf - did you install all components of Office including Clipart? It may be unable to files that run from the CD.

Thanks for responding AnnMarie.

Yep, I installed everything from the CD that I was asked to install. I've inserted the office CD when I get the error, but it doesn't bother looking at it.

I have used this Office Premium CD on my PC in the past with no problems, so I was surprised to find I'm having problems straight re-building it. (the reason I re-built it was the blaster virus and other issues, like the registry got too bloated).

I'm sure it's got something to do with Windows service pack 4 and Office service pack 3. It does something to the ms installer.

Anyway, have you got any other ideas?

Hi again rodf - I found this solution elsewhere that worked for someone else with an identical problem:

Quote:
After many months of waiting and occasional investigation of the diagnostic messages, I finally found a solution to the problem: a missing registry key for the ordinary/power users.

Creating (where they do not already exist) and setting the value of the keys below, for each user affected, seems to cure the problem:

While logged on as each user create/set:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\ xxx\Userdata = (REG_DWORD) 1
where xxx is Access, Binder *, Common *, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word *

* (these applications already had it set)

My Administrator ID already had these set, but normal users did not. Adding these values to the registry for each affected user made the problem go away.
Give it a try, reboot afterwards and let us know if it fixes your problem. If not, run a search for Msi.dll. When you find it, click on Properties and tell us what version you have.

Thanks again AnnMarie,
This looks promising, I will try tonight (Tuesday, Sydney time) and let you know how it goes tomorrow.
I'll also check the msi version, but I'm pretty sure its version 2.
After installing W2Ksp4 it changes the installer from version 1.x to 2.x.
This caused me a whole heap of problems BEFORE I rebuilt my PC - I couldn't get Office to run AT ALL for any user other than Administrator.
This is one of the reasons I decided to rebuild, but I didnt expect to get any new errors on a clean system. (yep, I'm very naive)

My rebuild process was
W2K then
Office2K then
W2Ksp4 then
Office2Ksp3 then
All other apps

I have a sneaking suspicion I should have installed W2Ksp4 directly after W2K.

Anyway, I'll let you know tomorrow.

Rod

Hi AnnMarie,

Nope, no luck. I logged on as each user and added the Userdata line to each MS App listed under 9.0 in the registry.
Rebooted the machine, tried to open Word but it came back with the same message PLUS it did NOT open up the app after I cleared the message.

So I changed the registry back to its original state. At least the kids can still use Office, they just have to put up with clearing the error message 2 or 3 times before it opens up.
I guess I'll have to keep looking!!
