Angry shutdown prob

i have always had this issue, but not often.
Since installing ie 6 sp1 and about 6 other critical updates from windows update my pc has done this about half the times it shuts down.
I've tried closing my dial up connection and firewall before shutting down but it still does it!
The Problem: I choose shutdown and all seems well but it gets stuck at a black screen with a flashing white cursor (top left). It's like a dos prompt but i can't type anything there and am forced to turn the pc of manually. Thus scan disk runs when i use it later :uhoh:
Has anyone got any ideas? Ive tried a quick look through microsofts support site but noting came up.

You're welcome. I hope that you find something that there works out for you, as those shutdown problems can be sooo elusive and difficult to pinpoint the cause in order to solve them.

groan ive tried the regestry patches, still had problems
i found that if i shut down all my progs except explorer and systray it shutdown fine so i think it might be something that's not quitting when i shut down windows.

I don't see anything "amiss" in your startups. Try this and see what happens.......uncheck everything in msconfig except for Scanreg, System Tray and StateMgr and set the 'power schemes' to 'Always on' and 'never', 'never'. You could then re-check items in msconfig, one by one, until you (hopefully) find the culprit.

yesterday i tried the above, seems to have done the trick i have everything off exept the basic plus firewall and av
i think it may be that the software for the extra buttons on my keyboard doesn't shut down right, still i never use those buttons so i ain't bothered
I also get the extra advantage of 89% free resources at startup!
