View Full Version : cant boot up after using partition magic

I cant boot up after using Partitiom magic. I wanted to add win 98 to my win2000 pro as a dual boot so I used the "ADD AN OPERATING SYSTEM" in Partition magic 8. I got as far as it partioning the drives and it shut down and now when I try to boot up I get the non system disk error. when I I try to use the rescue disks from PM it says there is an error........Its a sont vaio laptop with win 2000 ....on it didnt get as far as loading the other OS.
It wont even reformat from the factory disks for the machine. Im not that familar with dos at all really any help would be great. Can i still get win 2000 to boot up? thank you

Sounds like the MBR (Master Boot Record) may have been destroyed. You can try rewriting the MBR by using FDisk. Go to command prompt and type fdisk /mbr. Once that's done, you may need to redo all of your partitions. If so, unfortunately you may lose all data. If you have multiple drives, you can try to set the affected drive as a slave to see if you can get any data off of it. When I had to rewrite an MBR for one of my drives I was able to get most of the data off of it by setting it as a slave and booting off of my other drive.
