I have a compaq presario 5700t. After an electical storm it will not power up. The lights are on in the front of the computer, but it will not look at any drives for information. I took the battery out to try to reset the bios, but nothing. Any help is appreciated.

on the monitor is the floating box that indicates it is working, the fan is not running.

A number of components may have been fried by the electric storm. Usually, I've read, a plugged in modem is the culprit.
I think the power supply always get zapped and although the front lights come on, the fan doesn't so you will need a new power supply. Place your nose near the exhaust fan and you should be able to smell the 'burnt electric' odor.
Time consuming task but you can move components from burned machine to similar machine and find out in most cases which components are OK.
I've done this once for someone. Sorry my memory is so bad but the power supply and hard drive were dead and the memory and CD-ROM were OK, as I recall.

It could be just the power supply and it could be other components also. Theres really no way to know without testing. If you have another computer, you can test your hd, modem and other components to make sure they work. But depending upon the surge, your mb could also be fried.

What is this "floating box"? Is it generated by the monitor or the computer?

It is generated by the monitor. I have another computer that I can get a power supply from. Another question, I have an HP computer that was running 98. I put a windows 2000 image on it. The install seemed to go ok, (no error messages) but when it boots it goes from the HP welcome screen to a screen that says windows is starting back to the HP start up screen and then back the the windows is starting screen........ Windows never starts.
