Instruction to format and partition then OS

Would someone please give me a step by step instruction on how to format existing drive with Win 98SE OS & no partition. I want this drive to be wiped totally clean and then create 1 partition (2 drives) it is a 40 G drive. I want to load XP Home w/Service Pack 1 as the new OS. Any suggestions to a good split of hard drive space? and how to manage that? i.e C: at 10 G and D: at 30 G, using C: drive for OS and other core programs, and D: drive for storage. This computer is presently functioning, I have gathered what I believe are all my important files and I am about to burn them to disk(s).
