Computer shuts down windows start

I'm running windows 95 on a HP Vectra computer. The computer shuts down when windows starts. The computer runs through the usual start up checks. The windows 95 splash screen appears and then the computer shuts off. I attempted to start in safe mode same results. The computer starts in command prompt only. I ran scandisk from the command prompt which found no errors. Any one have any suggestions.

Have you installed any new or updated any software recently? What happens at dos prompt when you type win? Finally how are you getting to command prompt?

This is most of the time a symptom of faulty hardware like RAM or Motherboard.
There is also possibility of badly corrupted system files.
Try re-installing Windows - if you still can't start even in safe mode it could most likely be a hardware problem.
