Dial-up Tweaks

Are there any dial-up tweaks that could improve download/upload speeds? What I have in mind is perhaps adjustments in the Control Panel under "Modem" or "Network". I'm not looking for miracles. I'm looking for the best possible settings while using a dial-up modem. In the past I've gone to websites that claimed if I downloaded one of their files, it would automatically make adjustments to my registry. What a disaster! Any tips you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My 1st suggestion would be to make sure you have a quality modem. 2nd, if you live where you are allowed to do so, run a dedicated twisted line (Cat5 would be nice but not necessary) from the phone company's outside box thru the attic(or whereever) to the computer. Avoid crossing electrical lines. Before taking the trouble to run the line you can do a test by using a laptop to check the speed where the computer is now. Then go to the outside phone box, open it and plug in right there where the line that runs inside the house is. If there is a difference then run the line. What sort of speeds are you getting now?

Just some thoughts. Make sure you are not using a soft/win modem. Make sure the v.92 is compatible with your isp. If you have inline insurance, call the phone company and tell them you have static in your phone (a white lie) and they will check the lines inside the house for free. Make sure the connections inside of your phone box are tight.

What is your current online speed? If you are getting between 40-46 then you cannot get much faster. Also remember that you are limited based upon the quality of the lines and equipment between you and your isp.

Yes, you can do that in the land of the free. In fact I got aggravated with the mess in their outside box so I took some copper shielded 6 pair burial cable and ran it from their box into the attic and disconnected all of the rats nest in the box. I then put a punch down block in the attic and made runs from that with, of course, a dedicated run to the computer. I have since made a dedicated run for my dsl with that dedicated line filtered, therefore I don't have to filter all of the lines in the house.

dammit:

Several years ago the Bells started it, and the other smaller companies pretty much fell in line. There's a common junction point usually where the electrical main is. Everything in the house which runs to that junction box is considered your problem, unless you sign up for "insurance" and pay a monthly fee. Otherwise you'll have to pay for a service call.

I don't want them messing with the wiring in my house. They do a crap, shotcut type job. I prefer to have it done correctly. Most of the service personel wouldn't know how to do it professionally. If they knew how and did, they would get into trouble for taking too long on a job.
