Registry errors

Friends computer. AMD K6-2, 192 MB ram, 30 gig Quantum HD. He was having all kinds of problems running Windows ME, including lots of spyware and registry errors at bootup.

I fdisked and formatted the HD. Installed Windows 98 and still get the registry error at startup. Windows has detected error in registry & will fix & restart, etc.

Ran DocMemory on the ram. Burn in test, 2 loops and all is fine. Ran Maxtors diagnostic on the HD and also a surface scan with scandisk. Everything OK there. CPU temp is 52 deg. C, so it's not overheating. I know it has to be a hardware problem, but what do I check next?

I think it's fixed. (Crosses fingers.)

I pulled the 128MB stick of ram (It had a 64MB and a 128MB) and the errors stopped. I also formatted the HD again and reinstalled windows (just to be safe-didn't like starting off with registry errors). I had some extra ram lying around so I installed another 128MB stick.

No further problems so far.
