Now that the price of DVD writers has come down enough so you don't have to mortgage the house, I was wondering about which type is going to be the one to use, DVD- or DVD+. Is this a battle of manufacturers?

I think the only responsible thing to do is get a dual format DVD+/- Eventually, a standard will work itself out, but right now it's anyone's guess.

Prices for dual format DVD Writers aren't much more than single format writers. I've found LiveWarehouse.com (http://www.livewarehouse.com/livewarehouse/shop/category.asp?dept%5Fid=17&dept%5Fhist=017) to have some pretty aggressive pricing on popular writers.

A google search turned up this page with some information, they suggest getting a combo drive (like Blair said) but it also has statistics on dvd player compatability for each format:

Good Luck:)

I'd recommend the NEC models which are compatible with + & -
