Java Settings

I am trying to figure out what is going on with my Java settings. When I go to a java enabled page, everything is extremely slow, and continues to get slower until it completely locks up and I have to restart my computer. I have tried d'loading from java.com and Microsoft Virtual Machine from Sun.com. I have tried changing my settings numerous times but nothing seems to help. I have configured my Startup so that nothing but the basics are running at startup. I am about to pull my hair out o me head. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please!?
Thx

Hi, Welcome to CTH

What version of Directx do you have? Did this just start? Install any software lately, then this started> What browser are you using?

I tried to see which version of Directx I have, but cannot find that info. I use AOL 9.0 most of the time, but have the same problem in IE.

First, you should check to see if Java has been disabled. In IE, go to the Tools > Internet Options menu, click the Security tab, and select the Internet zone. Now click the Custom Level button, which brings up another dialog box. Scroll down the list until you see Microsoft VM. Under that item, you'll see Java Permissions, which lists a number of options. Make sure the Disable Java option is not selected; I prefer the High Safety option instead.

If the Disable Java option is not the problem, it's possible that your video driver is the cause. Try reducing the color depth and the resolution to fix it. Right-click anywhere on the Windows desktop and select Properties from the pop-up menu. This brings up the display settings dialog box; click the Settings tab and pick a lower color depth (try 256 colors) and a lower resolution (for example, pick 800x600 if your resolution is currently 1,024x768). Just to be careful, restart Windows with these settings and try running the Java applets that have been causing you grief. If they do run at these lower settings, you have a buggy display driver. Head over to the manufacturer's Web site to see if there's an updated driver you can download and install.

Thanks, I checked but java is not disabled. I tried changing my color from 32 bit to 256 and pixels were set at 800 x 600. I rebooted and checked but still had same problem.

Hi 1234, if you are running Sun's Java Runtime, try uninstalling it and download and install MS Virtual Machine instead. It's no longer available on the Microsoft site but you can download it from here.

Thanks AnnMarie, I did download Microsoft Virtual Machine very recently. However, I did not uninstall any other java applications on my pc because there are so many java programs and files, I cannot figure out which ones to get rid of. Could this be the problem? More than one java program running at the same time?

Yep, could be. Have a look in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Tell us what is there (Java Related).

OK, it might help if we had a look at what is running on your PC. Go here and download and run a scan with Hijack This. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Thanks, I downloaded the file and ran a scan. However I am unable to copy the information by right clicking. Is there another way to copy?

Did you save your log 1234? If so, go to Edit > Select All and then Edit > Copy and when you reply here, rightclick and click on Paste.
