Try reinstalling Acrobat Reader.

Does it give you an error about journal viewer? If so, go to Windows Update Catalog and download/install journal viewer again. I had this problem w/ .pdf files, but my problem arose when I installed Acrobat Reader 6.....

Well the obvious culprit is Outlook as that's what has been reinstalled recently, check its helper applications in Tools/Options are as you would expect. If you save the attachment to the hard drive and open it from there does the file work?

For the attachments problem, open OE, go to Tools>Options>Security tab and uncheck the reference to "Do not allow attachments....etc." Click OK, close OE, open it again and the attachments should be accessible.

Then, in Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>Programs tab and make sure the correct programs are selected in each category. I can't tell you which should be there because that's dependent on the individual computer's setup, although it's obvious from your post that Outlook Express should be selected for Email.
