I was wondering what the difference is in OEM software. I want to upgrade my ME to XP pro and I keep seeing this XP OEM for about a third of the price.
Is it the same thing, if so why is it so much cheaper. I'm always afraid of the old saying "If it sounds to good to be true it usually is" |

OEM means the component is intended to be sold as part of a complete system instead of as an individual component. OEM components provide the manufacturer with the most revenue plus a more secure revenue stream. This is because the OEMs, who are the ones buying the component, must do so under a contract. The contract guarantees that the OEM will make large monthly purchases of the component for a number of months. In return, the the manufacturers provide much better volume pricing to the OEMs.
In most cases OEM software is not supposed to be resold as an individual component. And in some cases OEM software has been modified for specific computer models. Most likely you can use it but...

Thanks Dan, I knew there was a reason I should not buy it. I guess I will just have to wait and buy the retail one.

Tho what Dan says is true, lots of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) products are sold legit, everyday. Example, last week I bought a CD-RW (OEM version). It came as a bare drive - no recording software, no drivers. That's all I needed, and I saved about $43.00. An OEM hard drive might come without utility software or ribbon cables. OEM software might show up without fancy packaging ('plain white box'), no installation manuals, etc. For those who know what they're doing, it's a good way to save much $$.
If you don't feel comfortable without the full retail package, stay away from any product listed as OEM.

I don't really care about a fancy box or a manual so long as the software will work in my system. I just updated our one computer with a new hard drive, more memory and the full package XP home edition. So with the money I just spent on it having to pay $300. on my other computer for XP Pro. is just not in the budget right now.
I saw the XP Pro OEM on line for about $120. and was tempted to get it. There seem to be a lot of company's on line selling the OEM's, how would I know if I can use it. |

Just email the company and ask. Or you can post a link here and maybe someone who knows will check it out for you.

I totally agree with zipulrich. I've bought a number different types of OEM software. The last was XP home for about $100. It basically comes bare bones, no manual, no fancy box, but it's the same software. Just a packaged cd with authorization code. I'd buy it if you trust the seller.
