I just got a new job that requires some computer skill. To which I have none. Anyway, We deal with construction plans and have a general company file. As I was in this I went to "BOX JOBS" in our file, just so you know, and saw a job that had the wrong name on it. so I went to the icon and right clicked on it and went to rename. It said are you sure you want to change the file name, or something like that and I double clicked "yes". POOF! and then it was no more. It had tons of info. Where is it hiding?

Hi troubion - welcome to CTH. Have a look in the Recycle Bin (dont empty it if it asks). You can restore it if it is. If you dont know how to do this, post back here.

unfortunately it's not there. I didn't hit delete, so that's why I'm confused. On the vertical bar to the left thought where you cn see other files and stuff, on the very bottom it had a details button, and I clicked it and it said last modified, the date and time, and I know that it's talking about what I did.

I'm guessing that you changed the file extension as well, and the application is no longer showing the file. To find the file again, try this:
Click on Start, then (depending on the version of Windows you have) either Find or Search, then Files and Folders. Enter the first 6 characters of the new name you gave the file, followed by '*.*'. Example: If the new file name started with 'Sample', enter (without the quotes) 'Sample*.*' into the 'named' box. Then, make sure that the 'Look in' box has the proper drive(s) selected and click the 'Find' or 'Search now' button. Once you have found the file, you will need to change the file extension back to the one recognized by the program that uses it. If we knew the name of the software that you are using, we might be able to tell you what that extension is. |

troubion, it is most likely that you have misnamed the file extension as jdc2000 states. Possibly the reason it has "disappeared" is that you are using an operating system with a setting to "hide system files". Depending on what operating system you are using (I note you posted this problem in our Linux forum but your descriptions above sound more like this is in a Windows environment) we can tell you how to unhide the file.
JDC's method will not work if this is a hidden file.

It's also possible that if you are trying to find it with the application that you would use to open it, the extension (none?) it now has won't show up on the list of files. In the application go to "Open", change the file type dialogue to "All files" and see if something looks familiar.

That sounds great, but it didn't give me time to pick another name. As soon as I clicked "yes" I wish to change it went away. I tried the folder. Sucks huh? If I can't figure it out I'll find out the software and get back with all of ya'll. Yeah, I'm from the south. Thanks.

It sounds to me as though you started to rename the file and accidentally clicked away from the highlighted filename. Sometimes when this happens, and you click yes or OK to Are you sure you want to do this, the file name will dissappear and you will have a file with no name and and no file extension. If you are in a particular software package at the time, the file dissappears because it no longer has the softwares native file extension. As others have suggested, go to file/open and change file type to all files. Then look for an icon with no file name or extension. Change the name of the file to whatever you wish and before clicking save, click on the file type drop down and select the native filetype for the software. Then click save. This will, hopefully, be the right file and will work for you.
