Question start-up problem

Hi everyone;
I hope everyone is fine today! I have a start-up problem for anybody to try and help me solve. This only happens roughly about twice a month and sometimes more but usually the first. When I start up my computer first thing it sometimes shuts itself off. Then I turn it on again and I get the options screen with the options of normal mode 'safe mode etc. I then scroll to normal mode and press enter. Windows starts to load but stops and the color display properties box appears, so I choose the true color ( 32bit ). The other options within this box are: 256 colors, high color ( 16bit ), true color ( 24bit ).
Did I choose the right color preference or what. Any help concerning this matter would greatly be appreciated.
Tks.blackkettle.

What version of Windows 98?

Right click on "My Computer" then to Properties, the general tab tells you.

It sounds like a video driver problem.

First thing to try is go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager tab. Click on the plus sign to the left of "Display Adapters." Double click on the display adapter (video card) listed under Display Adapters, go to the Drivers tab, click on the Reinstall/Update button (can't remember what Win98 calls it).

Step through the wizard to see if Windows can find and reinstall the drivers.

Post back with the results and if more help is needed, it will be forthcoming.

Question Miz/startup

Hi Miz, Idid want you asked me to do and came up with the following info:
I clicked on the update driver button which is recommended then I got a box search for drivers with 4 optiond which can be checked
1-floppy disk drives
2- cdrom drive
3-microsoft windows update
4- specify location which was already checked so I went that route and recieved a box telling me that I am already using the best driver for this device. Then it asks you want do you want to do :
1-continue using the current driver ( recommended )
2- install one of the other drivers so I choose #1
Should have I searched microsoft update database or what?

Tks blackkettle.

Question satrtup/Murf?Miz

Hi Murf & Miz
I just ran sfc and it informed me that the file setupx.dll "may" be corrupted.Location-C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
It also said that I should restore this file from your installation disks. If I do this where should I backup this file to and how do I put it back to where it once was? I am scared to try it without any help. Do they make a book called sfc for dummies? Please help!!!! Tks.blackkettle. :o

If it told you it is corrupt then it is corrupt. Go ahead and let it replace it. Put the backup anywhere, just remember where. This file often gets corrupted and can cause the symp's you describe. Windoes is pretty smart, although a lot of folks would disagree, if it says replace, then replace it.

Hi Murf: Thanks for the info, I will restore this file . I tried sfc to restore the setupx.dll file but could not get it to work. I thinkl it might be due to the fact that this win98se is what they call OEM. I even searched the installation disk for it and found nothing. What am I doing wrong? I went to www.dll-files.com and downloaded the file which by the way is supposed to be a zip file. After the download completed I scan it for viruses and nothing. It was not a zip file just one of those white windows flag icons. Now do I drag the old one out and drag this one in or what. I have a backup of this file on floppy so that's not a problem. I really need that sfc for dummies book LOL.
