My girlfriend has just aquired a basic, secondhand computer, running Windows 98. She had it running nicely, using it to play CD's & so on. The CD Drive was working fine until she relocated the computer to a different area in the house. Now, shes getting an error message saying it can't find the D drive. It is still getting power, it was spinning but when she puts a CD in, she gets that message. I'm thinking its come unplugged from the mother board. Any suggestions?

Hi sk8terbawb...welcome to CTH.
First thing to check is that the ribbon connectors are snug at both the CD and motherboard ends. Make sure the power is off and ground yourself by touching the case. Static electricity can fry components. If you're not confident with working inside the case, don't.
However, a simple move like that should not have dislodged what is normally a very tight conection. Could be that there's some dust on the lens (in which case you could try a CD cleaner) or something has been knocked out of alignment within the CD drive. They also die of natural causes. I'd save the trouble and go for a new one.

open the cover and recheck all connections. Also while it is open, you may want to spray compress air and get rid of any dust on the inside. Sometimes older computers are full of dust. Finally, you may want to get a cd cleaner to make sure the drive itself is clean. You can get it at most discount stores or computer stores.

Thankyou to both of you for your input, I will try your recommendations.
