In win98se,by pressing F8 key at startup and choosing ms-dos mode,we can play any audio cd by presssing the play button on the cd drive.(even though there is no cd-rom support in dos mode).this way,we need not load the os and can hear the song using a earphone.

my question is
1.whether we can play mp3 cd's also in a similar way?
2.while playing audio cd's in dos mode,is it possible to get the output in the main speakers?(no audio in or audio out pin available in speaker.)

When the PC is on an there is power to the drive then the CD drive acts as a stand alone CD player.

It will only play standard AUDIO CD's.
If you want output to speakers then you will have to connect the Headphone Out to the Line-In on an Amp/Hi-Fi.

thanks for the reply.what's the difference between cda and wav format?which one is better?does the cd-rom drive play wav files also while in standalone mode?
is it like this:
wav--plays only in pc's
cda----standard cd audio format??

CDA (Compact Disc Audio) is used for specific audio CD's that can be played in any CD player.

WAV files are a computer format which can only be used with an OS that supports them.

When you write an Audio CD the WAV/MP3 files are converted into CDA files (RAW Audio data).

Is the conversion to cda from wav or mp3 done automatically by the software like nero5?
