Changing Owner
How do you change the registered owner on 98 OS. I have just never logged off even though I could call the previous owner and get the password I would like to change it.
TY

Not sure what your asking. For 98 you don't need a password. Searching for the oem number in the registry will only turn up that # not a name. If you want to change the name search for the name then change it. Again a password is not needed to get to the 98 desktop.

A password may be required to get into Windows 98 if the original owner set one up. Since you just got it and don't care then you can eliminate the password by deleting the password file.
START | SEARCH Search for *.pwl when found delte it. Now reboot and it will come up and ask for a password, just hit enter to enter a blank password. If it is a BIOS password then thats another problem. If it is password protected how did you get in to begin with?

Thank you all. I wasn't able to remove or change the registered owner. I am just not that comfortable working in the registry. I did rename the user and elimanate the password so now I can log off.

Changing the owner is really as easy as HeartsRetreats says, but let me put it in a sequence of order.
Right Click on "My Computer" then to Properties, write down the "Registered Owner" - lets say its John Doe. Now get out of that. Now go to START | RUN Type in regedit and hit OK Your registry editor will come up, just follow these instructions and you will be OK. 1. On the menu at the top go to REGISTRY | EXPORT Give it a name and export it to your C: drive, you do not have to do this, it just creats a backup copy. 2. On the menu at the top go to EDIT | FIND 3. Type in the name our example is John Doe 4. Hit Find 5. When it finds John Doe it will be highlighted in the right pane, now just right click on it and go to MODIFY and change it. 6. Hit the F3 key It will now continue to search the registry and if it finds another one it will be highlighted in the right pane, do the same thing, hit F3 again, keep hitting F3 after each time it finds one and you change it. Now when it is done, it will tell you, now click on the X top right to exit. Reboot and the chages will be there.

Hey thanks alot Murf!! I thought I was going to have to change my name to Marleen and that sounds funny for a guy.
While I have your attn. would it be worth upgading the RAM from 64 MB? It's only a pentium 1 and I can't run aol software on it. I just configured it though another ISP without installing software so it works ok. I just don't know if a PENTIUM 100 processor is worth upgrading to say 256 RAM< Oh should I start a new thread? |

Anyway upgrading could help but upgrading to a new computer would be a whole lot better. Do not upgrade to over 128 - it would be a waste. You are right, this should have been on a new thread. Alot of times as topics get older, there are fewer viewers and fewer chances of getting answered.

Hey Marleen..
See what you started... Post the spec's of your system then we can advise, as renegade600 said 128MB with a 100mhz would be tops. Windows runs fine with 64MB better with 128MB, but depends on your system and what the max is you can use. Depending on the system, you may be able to upgrade the processor cheaply - maybe....

Oops
forgot to mention about checking to see what the max ram the computer can have before purchasing some. Murf - thanks for mentioning it. Your computer model name and number is very important. Alot of older computers cannot hold more than 64 megs of ram.
