Unhappy Restart problem after shutdown

I am running Win 98 SE on a Pentium II, 266MHz computer that I bought second hand. I have a Lexmark X75 PrinTrio printer and that is where the problem lies. If I leave the USB printer cable plugged into the printer when I do a shutdown and restart, the system shuts down to a dark, blank screen but just hangs there and won't restart. I have to unplug the printer data cord (USB), hold the computer power button in until the green power LED goes off, then hit power button again, and system will boot perfectly. Have checked with Gateway Techs and they advised me to download a BIOS upgrade that they provided. To be truthful, I'm just a little skeptical when it comes to messing with that BIOS! Scares me, and I'M FEARLESS! Thought I needed a "second" opinion so that's why I'm posting this. If anyone can help, I'd certainly appreciate it! Thanks! Bluemax

Would help to know what USB entries you have:

Right Click on "My Computer" then go to Properties, then clcik on the "Device Manager" TAB, scroll down to the bottom, hit the + sign next to USB and post here the entries.

Murf, Here's the info:
Under: View Devices by Connection:
--->Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
--->USB Root Hub
--->NEC USB Intellibase HUB
--->USB Human Interface Device
--->HID-Compliant Mouse

Under: View Devices by Type:
--->Universal Serial Bus Controllers
--->Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
--->Nec USB Intellibase Hub
--->USB Root Hub
I certainly hope this helps you help me and I thank you for your reply!!! You'll notice that I have an entry in the above for a HUB, which I just recently added to my system. I had this problem BEFORE I installed the HUB (I ran out of USB ports for my camera. Another bit of info for you to "chew on"....my optical mouse, Lexmark Printer, and camera are all on USB. Since I only had two USB ports to begin with, I had to go to a HUB when I added the camera. THANKS AGAIN for your reply and hope this will help. Bluemax

Just curious but have you disconnected the other usb devices and used only the printer? Is the hub plugged into the front or back of this computer? Have you tried to re install the printer? Do you have the newest driver for that printer? As old as the computer might be a bios upgrade might be the best bet
but is your bios chip removable? Dont flash it just replace the chip.

Under device manager (Not view devices by Connection or Types) Click on the + sign next to USB Controllers (May not be the exact wording) - but it usually is the last entry.

How many "Hubs" are there
How many "Controllers" are there

You should have something similiar to these entries

USB Root Hub
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
USB Root Hub
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

Since you have two USB conections on the computer itself you will have two Root Hub's and two Controllers.

The external hub probably will say "Generic Hub".

Does the "External HUB" have its own power supply? It would plug into an electrical outlet.

You may not have the latest USB drivers. If you post your Gateway model number, we may be able to help find. If you know the "Serial Number" of the computer, you can go HERE and enter that number then do a search for USB driver.

I also have a USB hub and run a USB Camera, Scanner, Printer. Have somewhat the same problem, my camera takes forever to load, printer and scanner work right away. Mine is self powered hub, and am currently reading up on the problem.

I'm going off-line in about 15 minutes -it's late here back tomorrow.

Hello 1966, I've had JUST the mouse and the printer plugged in (I only had two USB ports BEFORE adding the HUB). The HUB is plugged into one of the two USB ports on the REAR of the computer. My mouse is plugged into the other (2nd) one. Then, I come off the HUB to the printer and the data cord for the camera. I know the problem is NOT with the HUB as it done all this BEFORE I had the HUB installed. Yes, re-installing the printer was my very FIRST choice of action. As far as the newest driver for the printer, I can only say that the Lexmark X75 PrinTrio is less than a year old and I installed the drivers right off the CD that came with the printer. I don't know if the BIOS chip is removable or not. I did contact Gateway Techs and after scanning my system with a utility that they have, they said my BIOS needed upgraded. I've got version 09 and they are up to version 24 or so. They directed me to an upgrade for the BIOS, which I downloaded, but I'm just scared to death to mess with that unless I have to. Thanks for your help........Bluemax

I understand your concern about the bios but that may be the only way to go.
I know you have probably already done this but have you emailed Lexmark tech support about the problem. I have a Lexmark printer that I had a question about
and they at least responded with some suggestions.

Hello 1966,
Yeah, I've already contacted them without much success. In fact, they ended up costing me $65 for NOTHING. They suggested that the USB wasn't grounded and that I take the computer in for repair. I did so, and the repair tech charge me $65 to tell me that Lexmark didn't know what they were talking about and that the USB was, in fact, grounded! I'm beginning to wish that I'd bought a Hewlett Packard......anything but Lexmark! Thanks anyway for your concern.

Hello Murf,
To begin with, on my Device Manager at the top of the tab, I have 2 radio buttons. One says "View Devices By Type" and the other says "View Devices By Connection". Again, I'll give you the listing that best fits your description:
Under: Universal Serial Bus Controllers, I have these four listings:
Generic USB HUB
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB
NEC USB Intellibase HUB
USB Root HUB
and, that's it. It looks to me like I don't have any HOST CONTROLLER as you described in your last post. Yes, the NEC External HUB has it's own power supply. You may have "hit the nail on the head" about not having the latest USB drivers. The Serial Number of my computer is 0011088422 and the model number is: E4200-400. The manufacture date is: 9/28/98 and it is a Gateway Mid-Tower. I tried to connect to the link that you provided and it took me to Gateway, but after I entered my serial number and started the search, I got a pop-up that said I needed to lower my cookie setting to medium or below. I went to tools>Internet options and clicked on Privacy Tab and lowered my cookie setting to LOW but that didn't work either! There are certainly some strange things going on with this thing!! About ready to throw it out!
Thank you for your time and concern.......Bluemax
