Exclamation New Harddrive, won't allow Internet Access, password unknown

I am sending this question for a friend that I was unable to assist myself. They have purchased a used harddrive from a third party. The harddrive was installed and works, however, the third party had previously installed and/or activated some feature to prevent internet usage ( because of children in the home I suppose). Now, my friends have a harddrive that will not allow their computer to connect to the internet, and the third party tells them that its been so long since the harddrive in question was operating on their own pc...that they no longer remember the password. How do my friends get around this?

Thank you for any assistance that you can provide. The friends that have purchased the new harddrive are in their 40's....and not children at all...lol.

There is no feature on a hard drive that will prevent it from connecting to the internet. A program put on the hard drive maybe, although I never heard of one. If you don't want a computer to connect to the internet you would simply disable the modem or take it out all together. Did this hard drive come with a Windows OS installed on it or did you reformate it and then installed a OS?

Hi bronzetiger, welcome to CTH

I think what you are trying to say is that the machine has some parental control type software on it which you would like to remove, due to a lost password.

I'm afraid that this isn't something which we are able to help with at CTH, because as much as we might believe what you say about why you need that information it could just as easily be a kid whose access has been restricted by their parents trying to get round it.

Hope you can understand our position on this

Like the software I have on my three boys computers. It has that option but I haven't activated it. I'm using redirect. They type in playboy.com and get National geographic(for example). Drives em crazy but they are afraid to complain that something is wrong with their computers as they work for other stuff. I'm sure some other kid will explain what happened to them eventually.
