What is the external CD-ROM connection, parallel or USB? Does this drive have a model or does Sony only provide one type?

I see from the Sony site that you have a notebook, but the model that you posted isn't listed there. The external drive that you have should come with a PC card interface and should be recognized by the notebook, but to get a DOS driver for it, you might try Emailing Sony Support. You could also view the other information, including tutorials that they have in their support site for things like different OS installation.

Hi Alfons, the model is called PCG-631R and belongs to the 505 model series
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=wny0u9fmpqO0ruh18VW-sJj3rwZiU86ux50=?CategoryName=cpu_VAIONotebookComp uters_V505DSeries&Dept=cpu&TemplateName=item%2fsy_item_c&ProductSKU=V03FA1NB&ContentItemPage=true

The ext. DVD/CDrom is model DRX-510UL from Sony and connects either
via ilink or USB 2.0
I did try both versions/cabels with same result...nothing.
