98 to xp

I have read the tutorials for deleting and creating partitions(fdisk) and then formating the partions, then finally loading the OS.
I do not have a partition to delete, so do I format my hard drive first to wipe it clean, then set-up partion then....???
Also as far as a boot disk goes, since i am changing my os from win 98se to xp home, do I use a win 98 boot disk or xp?
Your help would be appreciated.
Bob

You can buy a version of windows xp that will just perform an upgrade from windows 98 with out formatting, on the same disc you can perform a new install, it will do it all for you ie no formatting etc.
