install win2k

hi,
i'm new to this forum. currently running win me on my old computer and wish to upgrade to win 2000. have contacted the manufacturer and says the computer is ok to run win2k.
i have the win2k cd rom and already created 4 floppy boot disks.
i have been reading the tutorial here how to do it for w98.
my system is fat32 and has 2 partitions C/D.
i have read the previuos post from ksdul.
should i insert my w2k bootdisk and fdisk from there or do i need a win me bootdisk to start the procedure.
thx, please keep it simple.

Welcome to CTH

There are two basic ways to install W2K.

1. Upgrade your current Windows installation
2. A clean install

Do you have at least 128MB RAM, because if you don't W2K will run but will be sluggish.

If you want to upgrade, then just stick the W2K cd in and follow the screen prompts.

Before you do, do some research. W2K drivers may not be available for some of your hardware, in particul your video and sound cards. Find these drivers before you upgrade. W2K CD may have these drivers on them, and if it does will install them. But I would make sure before the upgrade.

The best choice is a "Clean Install", however, doing this will wipe your hard drive clean. If you chose this option then you will have to:

Backup your email, favorites/bookmarks, any important data you want to keep. Also you will have to reinstall all your programs.

You do not have to repartition your hard drive, unless you want to. W2K will run on a FAT32 partition. An in my opinion, unless your on a network it will run fine. If networked, then I would recommend a NTFS partition as it is more secure.

Let us know how you want to proceed and we can walk you through it.

If you do not know what is in your box, then download Aida32 and run it. It will tell you just about everything you need to know about your computer.

Hi mfm1200,
As Murf said, you don't have to run fdisk to do any partitioning work unless you really want to. You could do the formatting (and partitioning, if you want to do that too) the same way as for WIN98, or you could boot from the WIN2K install CD (or use the four setup boot disks if, for some reason, you can't boot from CD) and do the formatting/partitioning via WIN2K setup.
During the initial stage of setup (after it copies files needed for setup, etc., which takes a bit of time), you will get to a screen which shows the current partitions on the drive, along with three options:

To set up Windows 2000 on the selected item, press Enter
To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C
To delete the selected partition, press D

If you want to run setup without deleting then creating the partition, press ENTER.

The next screen will be for the file system that you want to use. You could opt to keep the current file system (FAT32) or choose NTFS. Will now format (may not format if you opt to keep the current file system and the partition is already formatted).

Once formatting is done, you'll be prompted to remove any floppy disks, the system will automatically restart, and then setup will continue with the installation.

If your going to format the drive before installing Win2k you should be OK, but DO NOT leave Win98 or ME on your PC and and try to just upgrade it. I done the 'upgrade' a few times and it doesn't work very well. Win2k installs itself in a directory named WINNT but it will put the DLL files in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. As a result, some programs will quit working and you'll have a big mess. I've had to fdisk and format at least 3 systems because of the bad install.
