My HD has 37gb.
when I select the local disk from "my computer" it says that 31gb are used. but when I open the localdisk and select everything(also adding up directories by hand) there is only 19.7gb used.
where is my other 11gb?

Are you adding everything, hidden files, files inside directories, and subdirectories? And theres that working space for temp. files that is being use by the different programs currently being run. It is near impossible to add all files together by hand nowdays.

I only added directories and files in the root directory. is it possible that there is 11gb in hidden files and temps? seems a little excessive. Also, It's always the same no matter how many, or what different programs are running.

If you only added those in the root directory then yes you could have missed 11 gigs.

How do I check all the files? I need to see what's taking up the space so I can clean up.

I was wondering if this was what you were trying to do after seeing how much hd space you had available.
I would suggest using ace utilities from http://www.acelogix.com/ . It has a free 30 day trial and is uncrippled. It will go through your drive and find all unnecessary files. The first time I used it I got back about 8 gigs and did not have one single problem. However if you should have problems you can restore any changes. It is very easy to use. I have since purchased it because it did such a good job with my drive space and registry.

I downlaoded an suse the program. It didnt really free up much space.
but I did find that other 11gb. Its in a hidden folder _restore. is there a way that I can reduce this filesize. I'mpretty sure that it's for my system restore but I dont know.
Also, I'm using windows and I wonder if you could verify that this is a valid directory. I got a virus not long ago and I did a few sweeps for it in dos, which got rid of it( I thought). I did a few more sweeps and it found no viruses. But when I'm running windows, every now and then I get a virus alert for files in that folder. They appear to be (incrementing files) just wondering if this directory is a victim or result of my virus.

I could be wrong about this but if you saved a restore point and there was a virus in the registry, then you saved the virus. In this case you need to delete the old restore points and create a new one once you are sure the virus is gone.
I suggest you do the following, run a virus scan with the latest definitions. If you need one you can use the online one from http://housecall.antivirus.com/
Then I suggest you download and run spybot from
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/browse/0,cat,1443,sortIdx,1,00.asp Delete anything that it automatically places a checkmark beside.
Then download and run hijack this from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ . Then copy and paste the log it creates for others to check for a virus or whatever. I cannot read the log expertly enough but there's some good people in this forum who can. However, AnnMarie is the log expert so she will most likely help you with that portion
