I have an HP machine. half a year ago I got an nec 17" monitor, and it worked fine. yesterday I got a virus and had to reformat my hard drive. Something is now wrong with my display settings. the only display setting available to me is 640 X 480 and only 16 colours. I went to the site that makes the monitor and tried the drivers there. No difference.

I called the support at NEC and he told me that it was a video card problem, not a monitor problem. I'd have to find and install the proper driver for the video card. Problem is, I have no idea what company or model my video card is. The support guy told me that it would tell me at the startup if I rebooted, but I saw nothing.

Does anyone know how I can find out the hardware that's in my machine so that I can install the proper driver? is there somewhere in the windows 98 environment that I can look that up?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to CTH, hammy!

If you go to Start>Run and type in hwinfo /ui, your hardware and such will be shown there.

Perhaps easier is to run Belarc Advisor from here (http://www.belarc.com/ba5.html?B). It'll give you the lowdown on your PC....then scoot over to the vid card mfg. site for a fresh driver.

Try going to theHP tech support website (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/software.html) and search for drivers there. It's best to get the drivers that HP recommends.

Thanks guys!!

Actually, zipulrich, I wasn't able to find the H/W info from the resources that you provided me, but they did give me a lot of information about my pc that was very helpful.

Thanks a ton cpt. crunch!! The HP site had a driver fix that solved everything.

Really appreciate the help. :) :) :D
