A friend brought their computer to me and it will not boot. When you turn the computer on it says Starting windows 95 then it goes to a message that says
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Windows\Himem.sys , and also The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Windows\IFSHLP.sys, then it says Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., C:\Windows\Command.com. C>
Does the computer need to be shot or can it be saved? I'm really not sure what to do. help me please! Thank you

It sounds like a lot of stuff has been corrupted. If there's user data that you'd like to save, my advice is to get a boot floppy and attempt to copy off any valuable files.

I'm sure alot has been corrupted b/c I can't even see any files. I can't do anything with it....nothing. They only used it for internet purposes so nothing of value was really on the computer. I just need to know if it's fixable?

As gunrunnerjohn mentioned, you should start with a bootable floppy disk, preferably a Windows 98 Startup Disk. This will give you the capability to view the directory structure on the hard disk and to copy any info that you feel you can't live without.
Go HERE (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) and download the boot disk maker file entitled Windows 98SE OEM and save it to a folder where it'll be easy to find, then double click on the downloaded file and follow the prompts - you'll need one formatted floppy disk and you'll end up with a bootable W98 Startup Disk.

It sounds like its fixable. Its a matter of reloading the OS be it 95 or 98 I doubt it could handle any other OS. Reformat the HD keeping your fingers cross that there are NO Bad sectors on the HD that can be causing the corruption. Nevertheless if this is so, you only have to get a HD that the motherboard could handle. My assumption is that this an older PC so don't expect the best performance. Good luck!

I've already tried this and it doesn't want to boot up. Any other suggestions. This is an older pc. but it I beleive it should be sufficient for internet purposes only. I'm just at a loss as what to do since it won't even boot from the boot disk. Still in trouble. :-(

Hi texan,
Ensure that the boot order in the computer's BIOS settings is set to try booting from floppy drive first, then try booting from the WIN98 startup floppy disk.

Did you run the downloaded file to create the boot disk or just copy it to a floppy?
If you did the latter, then it won't boot because the system files aren't there, and if it's the former, then you either have a bad floppy disk or drive, or the drive isn't set to the same density as the disk has been formatted for - check the BIOS Setup to see what you have selected for the A Drive.

Ok- I'm BACKKKKKK! Ok let me explain. I know very little about msdos and the setup stuff. So obviously i'm not smart enough to figure this thing out. I can get to the Setup but i have no idea what i'm suppose to do in there. The CD-Rom drive is not working correctly so I took one out of another computer and put it in but i'm still getting the SAME message. "Type the name of the command Interpreter" Can anyone tell me in a SIMPLE way how to deal with this or do I just need to sledge hammer the thing into the ground because right about now that's what I would really like to do. Any help anyone could give will be apprecitated.
FRUSTRATED In TEXAS!!

Thank you! Very good info. I tried all of it and nothing happened except I'm still getting the same message. Maybe the Hard Drive is dead. Thanks Anyway.
