I updated a bunch programs tonight and two have an option to run in the background. I hate having stuff run in the background, so I normally go into msconfig and disable it under the start-up tab. Even though I do this, when I reboot, the programs start again and the boxes in msconfig are checked again to start-up. The 2 programs even start (and are the only 2) when I disable the entire start-up tab in msconfig. Any ideas why this is happening? I did try to clean up the regiistry, but I don't see what affect this would have. The 2 programs are eFax and VistaScan.

I do not know the programs to which you refer but what I suggest is that you go into the settings of both and look for something like 'Load at Startup' and deselect.

I've tried both to each and neither have such an option. eFax is a free fax service over the web that assigns you a fax number and allows you to receive faxes no matter the type of modem connection you have. VistaScan is the scan capture/driver software for my UMAX scanner.

Also look in :

C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

and

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\
StartUp

I also use VistaAccess for my umax scanner. I never tried disabling in msconfig, but I just deleted the shortcut to it in my Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

Backup your registry before doing this but look for those two programs in one of these regisry strings and delete it.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run-]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices-]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run]

The keys in Bold text should contain the items that you have already disabled in msconfig.

Thanks alot everyone. Got it fixed. The shortcut was in the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp directory, which I had forgotten I made hidden so it wouldn't show up on the start menu. Thanks again.
