System Resources

I have an HP with 128ram running 98SE. My problem is that I am always low on system resources. I like to leave my computer on for days at a time but I can only go for about an hour or so before i have to reboot. I have a bare minimum of programs running in my system tray. And after about an hour the clock gets slower as well losing minutes. But if I reboot the computer the clock is back to right time. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

After you reboot how long does it take before you have to reboot again?

Have you disabled stuff in Msconfig? If not then go to start/run/msconfig/startup tab and uncheck all unneeded applications in there. Make sure to leave systemtray, scanregistry and your keyboard if applicable....

Just a point to note in addition/explanation to Dodge's post...
Quote:

does not mean that you have a bare minumum of programs running in the background
Not all software will show an Icon in the systray so it may still be running.
Check a three-finger-salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del) immediately upon boot and make a note of everything in the list.
Use MSCONFIG to disable as much of it as you can.

I have gone into msconfig and taken out all the non-essential things running in the tray and background. I have also tried some of those programs that clear your memory for you with no luck. I can usually reboot and leave the computer on for about 2 or three hours but then the clock starts losing time and the computer gets slower again. Thanks for the replies on this.

Kali,

Can you please list all the items which you find under the startup tab in MSCONFIG please. Also any items you may have in the start menu Start/Programs/Startup

You mention that you have 128MB RAM but you didn't mention what speed processor you have ?

Upon a fresh reboot can you please do this - right click My Computer and click Properties. Then click on the Performance tab.

Then look down for a heading entitled System Resources, and let us know what percentage it reads.

Thanks

MishY

My processor speed is 650 pentium III. It is an HP if I forgot to mention it. My system resources when I start the computer are 76%. I don't have anything in my start menu. And in msconfig I only have the windows files, zonealarm(I am on cable interet so I don't want to take that out), virus software, sound, and msn messenger. I use the messenger all the time so I leave it in there. If this helps when the computer slows up I sometmes still have 50% resources left but the clock loses time and sometimes the icons on my screen change or won't come up at all.

you might want to take the cover off the computer and check to see if your processor fan is running. if it is, keep the cover off till the system slows down again and recheck the fan.
also make sure the fan isn't dirty or the air flow over the processor will be reduced.

sounds like the processor is overheating.

Train previously posted this information to free up resources which might help you:
How many programs are running in the background. Maybe this will help. OK, This needs to be done anyway as it will help your computer. Lets see if we can free up some resources.
Do Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Start up tab
This will list all of the programs being started at boot time. The icons in the bottom right of the screen. Leave
ScanRegistry,
SysTray
Your Antivirus
Your firewall if you run one.
Unselect all of the rest, reboot
As well, if you are unsure of what they are, post back the items in the list, maybe someone will know. See the post in this thread http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/021992.html
for more info on what resources are as well as a link for information about what some of those startup programs may be.

Thank You - Dodge!

I have a ton of stuff "Open" and have wondered forever how to get rid of them some other way besides Ctl/Alt/Del

Thanks, joedee
