I have a hp pavilion 7855 with ME, running on Explorer Version 6.0. For the last few weeks have had a problem with retaining cookies.

My Security is set at Medium, the same with Privacy
Have advanced set to accept First and Third Party and always accept session cookies

My advanced option is the Default setting.

Each time I visit a site, I must re log my name and password. The cookies appear in the folder, however when I shut down they are lost. I do not delete and have my temp files set to retain 28719MB

It appears I am accepting cookies, but some setting is automatically deleting them when I shut down.

When I go to the cookie folder, they appear , but after each new start up the folder is empty.

Am an novice, so if you have any suggestions, please keep them simple, Thanks

hi....try tools/internet options/advanced tab If you scroll down a way there is an option to empty temp files when you close your browser, if it is checked....take the check out

Thanks dammit, but have checked that out, have on default setting and that item is not checked. I did in fact toggle it on and off previously. I usually do not delete manually, but did so several days ago. The cookies go on during session, but all are lost when I shut down.

Are you running any type of popup stopper, if so which one? Some popup stoppers will delete your online history. Are you running anything at all that could delete your online visits or temporary files? Sounds like you are running something that will clear your online history everytime you shutdown your computer. Check your temporary internet directory and see if you have any files in it at all.

In settings, view file, have a load of files, and do not lose, just the cookies. I am not deleting them. No pop up stoppers, running avg anti virus. yesterday removed it and still had problem, have reinstalled it and showing no virus.

Download and run the following http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ Once you run it, save the log, then copy and paste the log into this thread. Maybe you have something running in the background that is doing the deleting. If so, this log should show it.
