Question This program has perfomed an illegal operation.

I`m having a brain melt down with an old system my 5 year old plays with. The problem is after windows loads and everything is fine then pops up a small pop up window with "SIDEACT" as its title and a round dot with a white x on it. It says " this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If problem persists contact program vender. Then i click to close it and up pops up anther with "RUNPPDRV" with same message, then another with "IKERNEL" as its title . I click on details and they say the same thing "sideact(and runppdrv) caused an exception 0000006h in module mfc40.dll at 0137:7c4e1d7d. Under "REGISTERS:" there`s a whole bunch of code info. Can anyone give me a clue as to why I get theses pop up error messages. This machine was set up in a network area workplace. Looks like it has a whole bunch of programs i don`t need.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Windows 95, 133hz,32ram,cd,floppy

Hi elrookie - I dont know what SIDEACT is but RUNPPDRV.exe loads drivers associated with PaperPort software and IKERNEL.exe is the InstallShield engine.

It might help if we can see what's running on this PC. Go here and download and run a scan with Hijack This. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Try Cam UnZip. It's freeware and quite user friendly.

Hi AnnMarie, thank you so much for you help . Ok here`s what happening, I got as far as downloading the zip program on to another PC that has Win\98. I download Hijack to desktop then transfered to a floppy with the zip program. I try to install\open Hijack in the PC that has Win\95. But again comes up " This program has perform an illegal operation and will shut down" I try to open it from the a:\setup and same old thing happens. I try double clicking the Hijack icon to open, and same thing.

On the PC with Win\98 that I downloaded Hijack, I can`t even run a scan there. I get a messege "A required .DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL was not found". I try running setup at a: and I get:

Setup initialization:

Setup is unable to locate the script file <c:\program~\networ~l\mcafee~l\setup.ins> which is needed to complete installation
ERROR 107

Am I doing something wrong or should I just dump these machines up the road here where we have these terrible fires in California and let the flames fix them.

Hi elrookie - once you have unzipped Hijack This, all you have to do is doubleclick on it and it will run.

Re "A required .DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL was not found" on your Win98 PC, download and install VBRun60sp5.exe from here. Once you have done this and rebooted, you should be able to scan.

What I suggest that you do, is to install CamUnzip on your Win98 PC and use it to unzip Hijack This. Once you have unzipped it, transfer HijackThis.exe only to your Win95 and see if it will run.

AnnMarie, I can`t you enough for your help. On my Win\98 PC I installed VBRun60sp5.exe and was able to open Hijack and do a scan.

But on my son`s Win\95 PC, Hijack will not open. I followed your directions and installed CamUnzip to my Win\98 PC and unzip Hijack to a floppy then tried to open it on the Win\95 PC, but I still get:

OK, well I think it would be a good idea if you uninstalled some programs. I have done some research and SIDEACT seems to be an organiser - see here so lets start with that.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs. Select SIDEACT and click on the Add/Remove button and restart your computer when the program has uninstalled.

Now go back and write down the names of the programs that you can see in Add/Remove programs and post them back here. BTW..do you have a scanner hooked up to this PC?

I have removed SIDEACT from my son`s Win\95 PC, and theres no scanner hook up to it.

Here`s whats in Programs Properties:

Adobe Acrobat 4.0, Belarc Advisor 5.1, DirectX Drivers, Discovery, Juno 6, LiveUpdate, MS Internet Explorer 5 & Tools, MS Office 97 Pro Edition, MS Outlook Express, MS Wallet, MS Plus for Win\95, NACOLAH Illustration System is on twice, Scroll Program, Tims32, Tims32[c:Ml\], Tims32[c:\cmi\]#4, Tims32[c:\cmi\]#5, Visioneer PaperPort 4.0.

The computer use to belong to a network and I see a network card with a green light that comes on, if that helps any.

What is BTW?

Hi again elrookie - uninstall Visioneer PaperPort 4.0 next and try disabling the network card. Instructions on how to do this below:

Rightclick on the My Computer icon on your desktop, and select Properties from the menu.

In the Properties window, click on the Device Manager tab. Click on the + sign next to Network adapters. Select your network adapter card. (It will be the choice that is not Dial-up Adapter.). Click on the Properties button in the lower left corner and in General tab, locate the Device usage area at the bottom.

Click on the first checkbox to select "Disable in this hardware profile". Make sure that "Exists in all hardware profiles" is also selected. Click OK to close the window, then restart your computer.

After you have done all of the above, can you tell me if you are still getting error messages and if so, please post the exact messages here (dont worry about any stack dump info though).

AnnMarie, when I went to disable the network card it had already been disabled, but I went ahead and took the card out. When I went to remove PaperPort it will not uninstall and the message I get says:

Uninstall:
Unable to locate the installtion log file `l:\act\database\delsL1.lsu`. uninstallation will not continue.

And the other message still pops up saying.

Runppdrv:
This program has perform an illegal operation and will shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor

hi

I suggest you first get hold of the windows 95 installation CD, and put it in the drive when you have it

don't let it run...

copy the win95 folder to hard disk
also locate the following folder on the CDrom
other\misc\eru
(... it contains ERU.exe)

next thing you do is run eru, and let it create a folder on hard disk, it will suggest C:\ERD\ where it will store current configuration data. (which can be a few megabyte...)
It will also create ERD.EXE in there, which enables you to restore the settings you just saved.)

the problem with the uninstall you currently have is because the uninstall info is on a networkdrive you cannot longer access.

after ERU, i suggest you run sysedit from start > run
search where it mentions runppdrv
put a semicolon ; in front of the line where you found it

also put the following line in system.ini
in [386enh] section
EmmExclude=A000-C7FF

save, and exit
restart the computer

let us know how it unfolds?
save, restart

(edited, ERU folder need not be copied to hard disk. run eru from CD)

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I will try and get a Win\95 CD and do as you suggested. Will get back and let you know how things worked out, maybe in about a week or two. Thanks for the help.

Jtdoom, I have obtain a 98 upgrade and install it and everything works find, no more error message. Thought I`d go that route instead of a 95 cd since it was time to upgrade my son`s operating system a bit.

Thanks for everyones help.
