I hope someone can help me with this problem. I have been running a Netscape browser for years, using the old reliable 4.7. Then a few months ago I upgraded it to 7.1. For a few months it ran just fine, then it started giving me error messages and closing down once or twice a day. So I put the computer through a defrag and a complete systems check using Norton Utilities. After that was done I could no longer load the Netscape Browser, I would only get this " blip" for a fraction of a second of the Netscape logo and then nothing. Using either the shortcut on my desktop or from the start menu didn't matter it would never load. Not any componenet of it. So I called Gateway Computer and spoke with them but they could offer no reason and no solution. Then I thought that the file might be corrupted so I did a re download of the short version and tried to install that, same results. Then I did a full download also no results. I had not wanted to completely remove this file/program from my computer as I needed the address book it contained but I soon saw there was no other way. So I removed it from the computer and then again did a full download. Thinking that if the program files had been corrupted just writing over it was not going to solve the problem . But even after all that it still refuses to load. It is installed I know as the icons have come on my desktop. I keep getting the following message each time I try to load the program and that is as follows:
"Netscape has encountered a problem and has to close" followed by this explination: Faulting application netscp.exe.version 7.1.00 faulting module xpcom.dll version 1.4.20030.62408 fault address 0x00040769
The Internet Explorer Browser works but I really do not like it. I suppose I could get used to it but I am determined to find out what the problem is before I start having problems with that one too. But I have to add my old netscape 4.7 was never removed when I first downloaded the 7.1 browser and that one is still working fine. I have not loaded any other programs or files onto my computer recently that would have caused this. I upgrade my virus protection every other day so I know it was not caused by either a virus or a worm. If someone knows what is causing this and how to fix it I would be very grateful, but please bear in mind I am NOT an expert on computers and while I can do many things on the computer , understanding the insides of it along with all the different file combinations is way beyond me so any attempt at solving this must be said in very simple terms or it will do me no good. Thanks at least for reading this even if you can't help me fix it.

I am a religious Netscape user too. Hate IE. Try out Mozilla. It is really just Netscape without all the bloatware. I use it and still have Netscape 4.6 installed as a backup.

Otherwise, I'd just try uninstalling and reinstalling Netscape.

Try the following http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7xpcomcrash.html

I also agree with the previous poster, netscape is an older and bloated version of mozilla. The best thing about mozilla is you do not have to spend time going through your computer deleting aol shortcuts.

Same thing happened to me immediately after changing from IE to Netscape. I also didn't like the AOL nags and general bloat so I changed to Mozilla Firebird. Problem solved. I'm now using the latest release of Mozilla and compairing it to Firebird to see which I like best. I agree with previous posters, you will probably be much happier with Mozilla.

Thanks to all who wrote about Mozilla. I decided to take your advice and give it a try. Best thing I ever did! :) I only took a 1/4 of the time for a full download that Netscape always takes and it is indeed everything in a Browser I was looking for. Best thing about it, Mozilla was able to transfer all my current e mails and my address book. I had tried doing a fresh Netscape download and the problem remained. I thought I was having problems with my nearly new computer. Mozilla proved me wrong, and boy am I glad!! As far as I am concerned , Netscape is a thing of the past.
