I have a problem on one computer running Win98. Whenever the user clicks on "My Computer", the machine freezes. Alt-Ctrl-Del shows that Explorer is not responding. What can be done to solve this problem?

Hi welcome to CTH.. Sorry for the delay in responding...

One thing you could try is this. Go to Start/Run/msconfig/startup tab Uncheck everything except Systemtray, scanregistry, and your keyboard if applicable... Reboot to allow the settings to take ... Then try the PC out and see what happens...

Hi MWBE...another suggestion - what happens if you right-click on My Computer and select Open?

I had a similar problem a long time ago when I used Uninstaller to remove Sisoft Sandra. A corrupt applet was left in My Computer. Solved it by reinstalling Sandra and uninstalling via Add/Remove Programs.

You could have a look at this registry key:

+ HKEY_Local_Machine
+ Software
+ Microsoft
+ Windows
+ CurrentVersion
+ Explorer
+ MyComputer
NameSpace

See if there's any CLSID in the right-hand pane referencing an uninstalled program. Delete if found.

It is likely a problem with the Windows installation. It is probable that a system file has been corrupted during the original install or at some later point. Try Reinstalling Windows. I see this type of thing from time to time with the 800+/- users I support and a reinstall usually clears it up.

While I will often try to sort out such problems with Windows - there comes a point of diminishing returns and therefore a reinstall is the most cost effective course of action.

Thanks for all the help. Nothing worked except reinstalling windows 98. So far, this seems to have done the trick. No more freezes on the one machine. However, I now have a different machine that is doing the same thing....I really think this Explorer freeze is catchy

Just wanted to let you know how the problem was solved.

Thanks for all your help.
