Yesterday on my new computer
(20gig HD, 256meg Ram, 800Mz AMD,Win98SE)
I was installing JANE'S HUNTER KILLER 688(I) It said if
I had problems running it after instalation I should reinstall with Direct X, included
on the Jane's disk.

When I would try to start the game I would get an error
that a vidio file was not loading CLICK OK , It would return
me to my desktop.

So I reinstalled with the Direct X on the Jane's disk.
BIG MISTAKE not only would HUNTER KILLER still not run(Same error)
I started getting a BLUE SCREEN of DEATH
on bootup saying something about VXD's and a biglist of error numbers
(I should have wrote them down but I didn't)
and I should reinstall windows
or press Y to continue, but system may be unstable.

So I uninstalled HUNTER K. but I was still geting the blue screen on bootup

So I restored the registry from one day prior copy
and that fixed the blue screen problem and all seems to be back to normal
and all other apps. working fine.

My question is how do I know if I have
Direct X installed or not.
I have all the MS critical updates and 5.5 ServicePack 2 installed but if
I check my MS updates installation history
Direct X is not listed.
It shows it as a reccomended update.

However if I look on my drive
C:\Program Files there is a folder named
Direct X, inside is another folder named Setup inside it are four icons Dxtool.exe
Dxsetup.exe,Dxinfo.exe and DxDiag
Judging from the date of the folder these
must have come from the 98SE disk, but does
this mean DX is installed?

I'm not real sure if it is or not. Sounds like Either DirectX needs to be installed or the game is corrupted...

Try clicking on that Dxsetup.exe and install it.... Then try your game...

Have you had this game installed on another PC?

You can check what version of DX you have via Start > Run > type dxdiag and OK it. The info is on the System tab. Click on the other tabs to see if there are any DX-related problems (info at the bottom of the tabs).

What version of DX does the game want to install?

Thanks Dodge & HKEd

I do have HUNTER K., on my old compaq and it works fine.
Great tool HKEd I didn,t know it was there. So using the
diagnostic tool the only problem I found was on the
DirectX files tab .

Note:
The file dsetup32.dll is a beta Version, which is unsupported
and could cause problems. You should reinstall DirectX to
get the latest version.

I also noticed the version on the new comp. is
6.1a and the compaq has 8.0 so I figure thats the problem.

I'm going to go to the DirectX site ind get the latest version.

Do I install it over the old version or do I have to uninstall
the old version first.
;)

Nevermind on that last question, the
DirectX site said the new version would over write any old version.

I will let you know how it all goes.

I installed the latest version of DirectX, then using the Diag. tool
checked what version and ran all the test to make sure all was OK.

Then I ran System File Checker and it found that "setupx.dll " was
corupted so I over wrote it with a copy from the win98 CD.

Thinking that was the problem, I reinstalled Hunter K but I was
still getting the same error, that a graphic was not loading.

So to rule out the CD I uninstalled, then reinstalled it on the Compaq.
I now get the same error on the Compaq.

So I guess the CD is bad.
Not being a gamer Hunter K is the only game CD I have and I borrowed
it.

I think I will buy something new and see how it does.

Thanks Again for all the help.

IF you get the same thing on 2 PC's then I would say the CD itself is corrupted....

Thanks for letting us know gstone.. Goodluck with the next game you get... I'm not a gamer either, so I'm not of much use on the Gaming questions.. But, I will try my best to help figure it out......
