Blank Sceen when starting up in Am!

I have an e-machine with windows 98 and a Compac V70 monitor. When starting up in the Am (not always) Windows 98 shows on the screen but then my screen goes blank when trying to load my desktop. When this happens, I shut down and re-start and desktop comes up. Any help would be appreciated as I am considered a novice at this game. :rolleyes:
