Hi,
I have been told that there is less"stress" that's if pcs can get stressed,by leaving the pc running as it takes forever to boot up,even though I have taken some programmes from the start up to speed up the process,it hasn't made that much difference. So having had a fan pack up once, doing loads of damage to the processor I'm wondering if continuous running would harm it?

This is one of the biggest arguments regarding computers, to leave on or shut down. Personally I leave my computer on 24/7. It has not been off for any extended period of time since I purchased it about 2 1/2 years ago. Basically I do not turn my computers off anymore and I have been doing this since 94 when I had a bbs. The only times its been off had been for upgrades, reboots, and power outages. Will it do any harm? Maybe shorten the life of the computer. imo I will be getting a new one about every two-three years, it really does not matter - to me. Am I taking a chance with problems? yes I am, but anytime you turn on the computer you are taking a chance something will happen. Am I giving you good advise? it depends who you talk to but it is what I am doing.

IMHO - do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

As far as those programs that help create a faster boot. Most, imo, may save a second or two but really do not make a difference. Just do not start anything you do not use at startup and it will be a little faster.

I've also heard people argue that it does more damage to the computer to reboot it a few times than it does to leave it idle during the same amount of time, since it "sends a shock" to the system to boot it...

Personally I've always been turning mine off overnight and such, but leaving it on all during the day.

I've seen computers that are on for months at a time without rebooting, that spend about 364.9 days out of a year on... and have been unaffected.

I've also seen computers rebooted about 50 times within an hour, also without an affect.

I can only go on personal experience, but I believe that neither rebooting nor sustained idling is likely to do any real damage, but I suppose there is always the chance (either way).
