On one of my computers I have Win 98 with Office 97. When we type something on WORD and then go FILE,PRINT, the compurter says: "There is not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation." Also when I go to FILE, OPEN I also get an error message saying: "Word has insufficient menory. Do you want to save as rescued document." I seem to have about 12 gigabytes of disk space and was thinking maybe the problem is with RAM? I really don't know what to do. I have tried reinstalling WORD 97 and deleting unnecessary documents. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Kevin

Hi Kevin...welcome to CTH.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but those messages are symptomatic of infection by the Nimda worm/virus. You can confirm this by looking at the Shell=Explorer line in system.ini. After Explorer.exe, you'll see a reference to Load.exe, a file dropped by Nimda (this is it's startup point).

There's more info and a removal tool here:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.nimda.a@mm.html

Let us know how it goes.

BTW, when was the last time you updated your antivirus program? This one has been around since September.

Just another thought...if you have a network, Nimda will likely have already infected any other system that's linked to the infected one. You should physically disconnect all computers on the network before starting the cleanup. Good luck.

HKEd, you are THE MAN. Since I have 3 computers networked through DSL, I disconnected them, downloaded the fix and ran the program. All computers did have the Nimba virus and it cleaned them up. I did have to reinstall Word 97 after the fix. Also one of my computers has Windows ME. On that computer I had to disable the system restore which was also noted on the page you directed me to. I never would have suspected this. Thank you so much!
BTW, you caught me. I have been avoiding virus software and a firewall for too long now. Do you have any suggestions for where I should go, what to get and how much to pay. I am a happy user of DSL.
Also does this mean as Microsoft suggested that someone was gaining entrance to my computer files, passwords, etc? The nerve!

Hi Kevin...glad to help. As for being "THE MAN", I tell myself that every day.

Nimda does not provide the level of access to systems that, say, a SubSeven trojan does. However, I note from your profile that you are involved in investment so, despite the inconvenience, it would be prudent to change all passwords.

For a firewall, I recommend ZoneAlarm - www.zonelabs.com (http://www.zonelabs.com) The basic package is free for individual users. As for an AV program, I use Computer Associates' InoculateIT. CA used to offer this for free, but have since replaced it with eTrust. I haven't used it, but based on experience with InoculateIT, I would go with eTrust - www.cai.com (http://www.cai.com) It's not expensive. There's also the free AVG program from www.grisoft.com (http://www.grisoft.com) - it's quite well regarded.
