Ok--I was impatient and now I'm paying for it! In my earlier post (all the system info is there), I asked how to do this right. Smurfy said to get aida16 1st. I couldn't get it to run, so I tried installing win95 anyway. The cd drivers on the boot disk say "no device found"--I have tried about 20 and can't get any to work, the CD worked just fine before now.

The door on the CDROM says Creative PC2 Multimedia PC.

But msd (before fdisk & format) said it was a
Sony CD
SLCD Ver 1.71a
1991, 1992
Sony SLCD Host Adaptor
Firmware ver 0.00

A Creative driver I used looked like it was going to work, then said there was either no soundblaster card or something like an IO? was wrong

The last Sony driver I tried says it has drivers for sound card stuff, and acts like it installs right, but I have been through the whole alphabet and C, A, and B are the only drives there. I have no idea what this B drive is (there's only 1 floppy on this pc) . But it tells me to put a diskette in.

I tried to get CDGod, but i can't seem to figure out how to format the floppy as a system disk (my working pc is XP) and can't get it to work.

Can anyone PLEEZEE HELP!!??

This is a tough scenario to coach someone through remotely. The sound-card or special adapter driven CD Drives could be set up initially in DOS using the special driver and applying things like the IO Address etc to the device line, and then W95 goes along with your changes to CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT. What you really need is a setup program that used to come with either the sound card or the CD Drive that allowed you to do this easily - you still need to set up the Sound Card jumpers, so that part isn't quite so easily solved unless you can CLEARLY describe the card; start with the make & model.

I'll have a look through some of my "Old Stuff" - I seem to recall that I had a 5.25 inch floppy with such a setup program - it used to work for me. If I find it, and it still works, I'll let you know. However, if you want to get rid of all that agrevation, get yourself an IDE compatible CD Drive - they're no more expensive than a Floppy Drive these days.

Ok Thanks! I guess I knew this was coming one way or another. I'm just a little intimidated to open the pc up. But I've been told that I could really use some more memory-and I know I do, it doesn't even have enough to run kids games. I was just hoping to postpone it for a while since she mostly wants the word processing on this one.

I know that my husband is probably thinking "Oh Great!! This is an expensive hobby" Well, everyone has to have one.

IMHO, that computer is too old for a novice. You can, in many places, buy a newer, better, used computer for the price of a new cdrom drive. You're already talking about increasing memory which, unless you can get used stuff for free, will be expensive as it has been obsolete for too long to be commonly available. You probably don't even have any pci slots in that thing. Your ide options may be very limited. Your profile didn't mention where you live. In the US there are several discounters that sell used lease return computers for as little as $20 to $40 US that would be substatnially more modern than the one you are trying to get running.

Thanks! I'm near Atlanta-know of any around here?

Well, I did open it up and it is a Sony CDU33A-01 CDROM. I went to driver guide and found the install prog & drivers. It still isn't recognising the drive tho. Guess I'm still stuck.

I haven't forgotten you. I just got busy. I will try to find a supplier for you. The normal ones I know of currently have lease return compaqs. I would not suggest one of those. I will look around. This is my Thursday. Give me a couple of days.

No Prob-and thanks for the help! Actually, I found a couple that I got on ebay this weekend. They are both HP Vectra's. I hope that they're in the kind of condition that the guy said, but for less than $200 total, including shipping, I guess I maybe didn't screw up too bad.

Pent 400Mhz
128M RAM, 6 G, CD, Floppy, Sound, Video, 2 USB, 2 Ser, 1 printer, 1 LAN , KB & mouse, win? installed.

I'm assuming that there'e no reason that the 2 monitors I have won't work. And hoping that I didn't get myself into another mess.
