What!!! No WinME section.... Bad MiSHY.
I need to know your opinions on this... It's about Win95, Win98, and WinME.
Win95 is OK, but I like the way Win98 and now WinME look. I like being able to choose 2 colors on program bars and such. I know it's mostly just for looks but I like being able to do that. Of course Win95 doesn't crash once I update and patch it a little.
Win98 is nice, like I said the way it looks and "feels" is just nicer than Win95... it supports more stuff and lets me use 2 video cards which I've been wanting for a while. It's almost perfect for me, but it crashes... not as much as it used to but it still crashes. (I haven't solved that startup crash we were working on a while ago)
WinME is what I'm using right this second, but I'm having troubles deciding what to do. It looks great and I love some of the extras like when you use the recycling bin... they've got a button right there to empty it. It's nice and it doesn't crash on startup like Win98 does sometimes... HORAY!! But... and this is a big BUT... If you didn't know... they took out DOS!! Sure you can run a DOS window, but that's it. There's no "Restart in MS-DOS mode". I really hate that. In order to use DOS I have to make a Bootdisk and use that!! Damn it. I'm very confused as to what to do.
I like the way WinME looks... more so than Win98... and way more than Win95... but I can't use DOS (easily)... Win98 is almost perfect... it's the "in between" favorite, but it cashes on startup randomly. Win95 is fine... after patches and updates it's almost like Win98 and it doesn't crash, but I can't use 2 monitors.
I hope you guys understand my conflict... either that or you're calling me crazy... not sure. LOL http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
I really like WinME and if it wasn't for them taking out DOS I'd be keeping it for sure. I could go on and on about my reasons for each of the operating systems, but I just can't figure it out. Please let me know what you know and think... this shouldn't be as hard as that Win98 startup crash. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Sorry this is getting long... I do have some questions that might help:
WinME: Can I make all the directories in Windows Explorer be seen in the "details" view without having to change each folder seperatly? Do you guys know of a way to add the "restart in dos" option??
Win98: Have you guys found anything that might fix the crash yet???
Win95: Is there a way I can use the 2 color option on program bars and general "feel" of Win98\ME... Adding that desktop update that comes with IE4 would be part of it... but I want more than that. Also, 2 monitors would be nice too.
Guess that's it... finally. Sorry, on my first day back all I do is ask questions!!

Sorry... I try not to make them too long, but I know you guys are good and won't make fun of me for writting such long posts. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Yeah I'm back... about the only thing I was doing online before was checking e-mail. My work hours changed and I didn't get as much computer time as before, plus there's a great woman at home and sometimes you have to give them attention too. Plus my brain was kinda fried from trying to figure out that startup crash. I do know that Win98 does have troubles with AMD procs at or above 350Mhz though, but it seems to be on select systems (like mine). M$ has a couple of articles at their site. I plan on taking files from WinME (the same one the patches fix for Win95) and replacing Win98's files... maybe with some luck that will fix it. Yeah right. My computer is running fine aside from my crashing OS and broken CD-Burner.
Guess I talk later... anyone got an opinion about my "question" above??

It's an Acer 6x4x32... It was working for a couple of months then stoped woking at 6x and 4x I could record at 2x on CD-Rs and 4x on CD-RWs. I downgraded the firmware and was able to burn at 4x. Acer tech support had me mail it in... I got back another burner and it didn't work at all. Every CD I put in... no matter what it was, was identified at a 1kb music file. I sent it in again and got back another. It would only work at 2x. After being told that the firmware wouldn't have anything to do with it, I downgraded the firmware and it worked at 4x. So that's where I'm at now. I called again today and now the told me it must be the amount of free space on my C: drive. So I installed Win95 (which I'm running now) and tried it. Didn't work. (they want me to have 700Mb free...well I've got 900Mb free and it still doesn't work) So I called again... not tech support but customer service... they're sending me an "upgrade" (a 8x4x32) to appease how pissed I am. So we'll see if the 8x4x32 works. That's the basic story... shortened of course.
What's your feelings on Win95, Win98 and WinME Steave???

Tekno,
I've been working on the site mate - I haven't been doing much moderating of late.
But here's some good info on WinME and how it compares to Win98
Click Here (http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/winmeupgrade/default.asp)
I haven't actually used WinME yet. I'm using Win2kPro.
Personally if anyone was to be upgrading their OS I would recommend Win2kPro for this simple example - I have had this computer running now for a whole week without turning it off, and it hasn't crashed once - my system resources are as good as they were when I first turned it on - and I still get to keep DOS.
Win2k - you have the choice whether to lose DOS or not by converting to NTFS instead of FAT32.
WinME - will have increased driver support over 98SE - but from what I've heard from most techs WinME is just another Win98SE packed with some second rate extras that you can download for free anyway - like Winamp instead of that horrid Windows Media Player 7.
Another problem with WinME is the system file protection which won't let you modify any integral files. If you're into tweaking your system this can cause major problems. But there is a way around that which I'll go into if you need to know.

Win95 - have you tried using WindowsBlinds or other programs that will change the appearance of Windows ????
2 monitors I think from memory that was only an added feature that came with Win98 and won't be in 95.
Win2k combines all the things you're after plus DOS capability - but having said that with your hardware crashing problem with Win98 I'm sure you're aware how picky Windows 2000 is with the hardware it runs on.
I've been working on the site really hard of late Tekno so I haven't been on the boards so much. Sorry about that.

I know you've been working on the board... I was kidding... see LOL!
I was just trying to draw some attention... that's all... and it looks like I got it too. I'll do a check on that "winblind" thing too. Thanks for the help... I'm wondering though... if WinME is mainly just Win98... why does M$ say that it doesn't support real mode dos... Win98 does. And one more thing... why doesn't WinME crash, but Win98 does. I'm so sad http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif I've also found out that WinME is running MS-DOS version 8... how about that. So why can't I restart into MS-DOS mode... cause M$ sucks... that's why.
Have you guys ever heard of "adding" that "restart in MS-DOS Mode" option to the shut down menu... maybe more like removing it, but I'm sure it could be reversed... right??
Later. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Do any of you guys watch a show called South Park???

lol Yea I watch Southpark http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
One of the reasons M$ is distancing itself from DOS is because Win32 applications and games just dont crash as much. They run better in a Win32 environment. Same goes for Win2k.
And I'm afraid to say that you're going to be facing a losing battle trying to keep hold of DOS in the future. Prepare to see one of the foundations of computing be made extinct (IMHO).
Yeah I've heard of adding and removing the "restart in MS-DOS mode" option, but whether or not it would work in ME is a something I am not best to ask having not used ME. But they probably left it out because it was either not even possible to use, or they didn't want ya to be using it.
I think the closest they give you to DOS is a Command Line window like they do here on Win2k right ????

Hello Dere
As far as I am aware the only version that truly supports dual booting to real HTG DOS is Windows 95a. - although you can add SP1 and it will still work.
It is possible to run a command prompt from OSR2,Win98, and Windows 2000. The command line interface provides many of the true DOS functions but certainly not all. It's really too bad because not only,[as noted above],is DOS the fundamental backbone of PC computing but also there have been a couple of times where my digital keester would have been in a sling if I hadn't been reasonably proficient in DOS. In fact on one of those occasions I was able to salvage enough of my accounting records to prove that the local revenuers were mistaken and to prove that [Cue Jowls]: I am not a crook.

Well... if you want some info on WinME I can install it and check things out for ya... even though those big expensive web sites out there will do a better job than I can.
I do know this... there's no DOS and if you try to install "MouseWare" for logitech mice it'll freeze your mouse until you uninstall MouseWare... and then from then on the "windows mouse" will "feel" funny. Also, if you like to view Windows Explorer in anything other than the default... such as in "details" view... so far it seems you have to adjust every folder seperatly... that gets very annoying.
I was wondering about South Park cause I finally found a place to download episodes... I was watching the legal way before but then my source stopped getting Comedy Central. Before about 2 weeks ago I hadn't seen any of Season 3 or 4 and I had missed about 50% of season 2. The files are in the "real movie" format and have been sampled at a nice rate of around 200Kb give or take. The episodes are around 35Mb downloads. If you want the address let me know. It took me around 2 weeks to stumble upon this site... all the other sites had links but none of them worked.

Well, here's one answer...perhaps not a good one, tho.
Get Linux. Really.
Only good thing I've seen in ME is the defrag utility. I kept it, uninstalled (back to 98FE), and use it in place of 98's.
My Win98 box is on 24/7. Never crashes...not in a year, anyway. I do reboot 1-2 times a week, as resources get around 70-75% or so. It's tweaked out, but running on P200, 64Mb RAM.
Perhaps this helps...perhaps not.

Well... I would switch to a non-M$ OS but I'm a gamer first and foremost... and to tell you the truth... I've got over 100 games that will only run on (you guessed it) Windows. However I do have a ton of DOS games that I use once and a while not to mention some utillites that need DOS... such as "Norton Ghost". To me DOS is simply restarting the computer to MS-DOS mode... I'm not sure if that means it has duel booted or not... but I require that for the time being... since I don't have 2 computers... one for DOS and one for whatever... one day I will though... just not today.

then dont run ME stick to win98SE cant go wrong there, i have less problems with it then anything else ive tried.
I been playing with ME for the last couple of days i never seen so many error screens in my life id get one fixed then i would get enougher,so i gave up to night going back to 98.
I have a acer cdrw, had it about a year now I probably done about 300 disk and never had a problem.mines only a 2x2x16 works good though.
so I wouldnt hesitate to buy enougher one.

Ya... I like my ACER Burner too... I just get bad luck sometimes.
Like with Win98SE... MiSHY and Steve know what kind of hell I've been going through with that OS... What was it guys??... over 100 posts and still nothing worked??? It still crashes to this day... and I'm 99.9% sure it's my AMD chip... I know Win98SE doesn't have troubles on MOST systems with AMD chips running at or above 350Mhz... but I'm not that lucky... Win98SE does have some troulbes with AMD chips... but that only occures on very select systems.... like mine. I think I'm going with a Pentium next time...
BTW - I've got a "Super 7" socket running an AMD K6-2 450Mhz... What is the fastest\newest Pentium I can put into this monster???? Do they have Pentium 2 or 3s that can run in a "Super 7" socket????
Thanks guys,
