Does anyone know why when I right click a graffic in MSIE and choose set as Wallpaper it appears on the desktop, but if I choose that same file from Display Properties that it forces me to use the Active Desktop to have the same graffic applied to the desktop?
I know that I can save the file as a bitmap and that solves the problem. I was just wondering why a jpeg or gif from the browser works but it will not work when I access the graphic from Explorer. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/confused.gif

Have a look in C:\Windows for .bmp files, you will see one called "Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp"
Every time you right click, set as wallpaper on a .jpg, Windows overwrites this file with your selected .jpg converting it to a .bmp
Same goes for Netscape wallpaper, some graphics programs (like Irfanview), MSPlus etc.

Thanks I did not know that. There are some gifs and jpegs that will display on the normal desktop when launched from windows explorer. Must be something in the coding of just some of the graphics http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/confused.gif
Thanks again smurfy.

Tram, when you find a gif or jpg that you want to use as wallpaper, instead of using 'set as wallpaper' function, just right click and save it as...and put it in a folder called wallpapers, or whutever. Then with a paint program, blow it up to 800x600 (if that is your screen size), and covert and save as a .bmp into your c:\windows\system folder.
Then go into display properties, and under wallpaper, your 'new' wallpaper will show up. Windows will only recognize windowsbmp's.., however, there are programs you can find online (freebies) that will utilize jpg's and gifs' ;>

Thanks Rosie. I have all that down pat but there is still the question of why some files will move to the desktop and other require the active desktop to display them. Just must be a windows thing.
