This problem just started and it looks like I may have bad memory chips. I would like to confirm or other ideas before I do anything drastic. Once I get past the bootup problems the system run perfectly. Here is what I have and the messages.

Computer System
CPU Pentium II Celleron 400
128 Meg Ram
Asus Mother board P3V133
Fujitsu 6.4 Gig HD MPE3064AT
SB Live Ensonic PCI
Video ATI Rage 128 XPert
AGP 32 Meg RAM
56K Modem AOpen FN56-PM
Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers
17 inch Monitor PTC N-701 T
Trinitron

During cold bootup (1st of day) before Win98 splash screen, get message

error: himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 01BE46AC
XMS driver not installed

Next message:
The Himem.sys is missing.......

XMS driver V-3.95
Extended Memory Specs (XMS) V-3.0
CopyWright MS 1989/95
Once system is warmed up, all further bootups are A-OK

Next cold boot
At bootup, before splash screen, get message

A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 0028:10CE in vxd (01) + 000000CE.
The application will be terminated.
Again all further bootups are OK

Hi,

Just at first to eliminate the RAM problem I would suggest that you try to boot into safe mode.

When booting into safe mode Windows checks your HIMEM and it is actually a very good test for RAM.

To do this hit F8 when you see the "Starting Windows" text at boot.

If you can boot to safe mode check device manager for any problem hardware.

Let us know how it goes,

Right on the money.
It was a memory problem. Slipped a stick of 32 Meg SDRAM and all OK. Now all I have to do is get this 128 stick replaced.
Thank you.
