When I use DUN to get on the Internet, it asks for my password everytime (The username is always there). The save password box is grayed out so I can't click it. I tried reinstalling Communications from Windows Setup, but it has no effect. Is there anyway I can save the password, so I wouldn't have to keep on typing it in??

I installed it already. I even deleted it and reinstalled it. It's still grayed out in the "Save Password" box.

This answer describes how to prevent Windows 95/98 from prompting you for a password when you start Windows 95/98.
Note that this information applies only if you are not using user profiles. If user profiles are enabled, following the steps in this article does not prevent Windows 95/98 from prompting you for a password.
MORE INFORMATION
To prevent Windows 95/98 from prompting you for a password at startup, follow these steps:
Right-click Network Neighborhood, and then click Properties.
On the Configuration tab, click Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box, and then click OK.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.
In Control Panel, double-click Passwords.
Click the Change Passwords tab, click Change Windows Password, and then click OK.
In the Change Windows Password dialog box, type your current Windows password in the Old Password box. Leave the New Password and Confirm New Password boxes blank, click OK, and then click OK.
Click the User Profiles tab and verify that the "All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings" option is selected. Click Close.
Shut down and then restart Windows 95/98.
The next time you go on the Internet if it asks you to put in your password enter it again and check to save password and after the first solid connection it should be back to saving for you.

Is your password list file damaged?
You may not be able to save a password setting if your password list file is damaged.
If Windows 98 detects such damage, you will be prompted to delete the damaged file. However, Windows 98 does not detect some types of damage.
To create a new password list file
Click Start, point to Find. If My Computer does not appear in the Find in box, select it from the drop down box. Click Files or Folders.
In the Named box, type x.pwl, where x is the name you use to log on.
Click Find Now.
Right-click the .pwl file, and then click Delete.
After you delete or rename the file, restart Windows 98.

And yet another if the other doesn't work either. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif
Hope this one works?

Is the Rna.pwl file damaged?
The Rna.pwl file may not exist on your computer because it is not required in some configurations.
Rename the file, so that Windows will create a new copy. If this file does exist on your computer, it may be damaged.
To replace Rna.pwl file
Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following line:
ren c:\windows\rna.pwl rna.xxx
where windows is the name of your Windows folder.
Press ENTER.
Restart your computer.

I've deleted every *.pwl file, and there was only one(myname.pwl). Then Windows said I have a protection error. So I had to restart my computer again in Safe Mode. I just restarted and everything else was OK. The password box is still grayed out though.

That didn't do anything? Well you are welcome! You really should have tried it it would have fixed your problem. That solution came from MS, Bill even. Also why didn't windows show user.pwl? Do you have more than one user profile? does your mom know you are playing on the computer? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Very strange. I do not know what your problem is or how to fix it. Sorry.

Hey,
Firstly, you must have Microsoft Networking/Microsoft Family login installed for Win98 to save your password as mentioned by previous posters.
If you went the route of deleting your *.pwl files you must enter your password and username into your DUN properties immediately after having doing so otherwise it won't work.
This is what Microsoft have to say on this issue Click Here (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q148/9/25.asp)
If that still doesn't work try this ::::
Go to C:\Windows
Delete all .pwl files
Open system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]
Go to ControlPanel>Network
Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login
Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, choose properties, choose the Connections tab, highlight you dial-up connection, choose settings and enter the password here also.
Then reboot.
I hope that helps,
MiShY

It is now fixed. I Disabled automatic logon in REGEDIT. Then I removed all of my shortcuts to Dial-Up Networking and My Connection to my ISP. Then I removed My DUN Connection from Dial-Up Networking. I forgot to delete it before. I then deleted Communications and reinstalled it.
I guess the problem was that I forgot to delete the connection from DUN.
Thanks for the help. I love this board. I got more questions. So watch out.
