A few months back my computer got the kak virus. It took me a couple of weeks to figure out what was wrong, as my virus scan wasn't up to date and I had not heard of the kak virus. I updated VirusScan, and took care of the virus. When virus scan ran, it asked me if I wanted to delete a particular file. I didn't look at what file it was, just deleted it. Now my computer has been very slow. Some of the problems I am experiencing:
1.Mouse freezes up for 20-30 second intervals for no apparent reason.
2. no autocomplete in fields when I am online, except in the web address bar. ie., address fields, zip code fields, e-mail fields.
3. takes about 20-30 seconds to tab from one field to the next.
4. takes up to a full minute to go from one page to another if clicking on a BUTTON. Links work fine.
Could these be complications from the kak virus? Should I reinstall windows? Please say no! I had no problems pre-virus.

When you ran the AV what type of Kak virus did it say it had found ?
Firstly, I would strongly suggest you go to Nortons site for a free AV check. To do so click here (http://security.norton.com/us/error.asp?errorCode=4&venid=sym&langid=us)
All the errors you seem to be experiencing are IE or Netscape related would that be correct ? (which browser do you use ?)

when I ran the AV, I deleted the danged thing so fast I didn't even know what I deleted. I don't have that annoying little window pop up any more that said something about driver error, and another that said cannot find file kak. whatever. I went to Norton's site and couldn't do anything because I'm not accepting cookies. Or that's what it said. I know I know how to change that, but I don't remember how. *Sigh* Forgive me for my ignorace? I am using IE, BTW. I'm not sure it's just a internet thing, as it will freeze for a few seconds at a time in MS Word and Solitaire, or when I am navigating "My Computer/Explorer".

hmmm that's strange about the Norton site because I too had that error message yet I am accepting cookies. They must be having problems on the site.

Okay, here's what I got:
Our virus scan of 1512 files detected the following viruses:
The JS/Kak.Worm Virus was found in file C:\WINDOWS\kak.htm
You should immediately disinfect your system. Some viruses continue to do damage as you run your PC, so please, do not ignore this problem!
Is there somewhere on the web that I can get the right thing to fix this? I thought I had gotten rid of it once already!

Here's the Anti Virus program I have, it is free and will also check your incoming and outgoing mail for viruses.

Hey,
I suspected you would have still been infected and this is what is causing your computer slowup.

Hi Mishy.
We had inoculate on my wife's computer, and it worked fine for a while, but then when I used it last wek (after upgrading it) I did a virus scan with it, and some of the results showed that it couldn't scan its' own files, now what's that all about??? Seemed very odd to me, that did!!!

Okay, I downloaded the antivirus software that Dave suggested. Ran McAfee again just to see, and it detected it and deleted it. AGAIN. Go Figure. I think I should have restarted my computer. I think I'll do that now. I am a little addlebrained tonight. LOL One thing I did want to ask though, is after I get rid of the virus, do I need to download the patch too? Will that fix what I'm experiencing. Oh, and just another FYI, my e-mail alert echoes too!

one more thing, when I did a "find" files, it brought up a file named Ae.kak on the C:\ drive. Should this be deleted too? Last modified 3/14/99. I know I haven't had the virus that long, surely!

I strongly urge you to let the AV remove what is necessary, and not go through your system deleting what you think might be the virus or possible virii.

Just as an addition a virus doesn't necessarily just have to exist as one file. Usually it infects your Windows registry to make itself load everytime you boot your computer. Which is why simply deleting the file won't remove the virus.

I find it very hard to figure out which is the best Anti Virus program out there. We have Norton's AV on both our computers, but I'd been told it's beter to maybe have two, simply because they are not all equal at updating as often as they ought to be! I tried having the Nortons AV running all the time, but found it to be a bit of a systems hog! With the Grisoft AV I have as well as the Norton, I do have that one on all the time, and it does not seem to slow the computer down in any way.
I guess I should also have mentioned that after running the Inoculate scan, I then ran the Norton's one after upgrading it (I always run the upgrade feature before doing a scan), and I watched the scan run its course, and saw it go through the Inoculate files. When it was through, it didn't say that it couldn't scan any files.
Don't get me wrong, I've heard great reviews about Inoculate, I just can't figure out why it wouldn't be able to scan it's own files!!

I had that virus a few months ago. AE.kak is your autoexec.bat file. It renames it. Do a search in your regisrty for hta.kak or kak.hta. There will be a few entry's to delete there. Go to start, run, type msconfig and you will see Kak. And I think there is an hta file in your windows startup directory if the av hasnt already removed it.

Okay, I ran both McAfee VS and the AV software you suggested lufbra. Ran McAfee first, it found kak, I deleted it. The free AV software did not detect anything further. I installed the patch. I am still experiencing the same problems as before. Buttons slow, mouse freezes, no autocomplete. E-mail alert stopped echoing once kak was removed, thank goodness, that was annoying. I have McAfee First Aid, and it did not detect anything abnormal with my system. Why could it be so slow now and not before? Thanks for being patient guys.

I just removed the Kak worm from a customers pc and she too was experiencing alot of the same symptoms you are. I also found she had 11 programs running at start up. Once we talked and figured out what she needed when she started up as in Anti-virus always, but things like AOL Instant messanger and all other prog's that can be selected as needed from the program menu were takin off the start up menu. WOW what a difference that made. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif If you look down next to your clock after you boot up, how many icons other than the clock and sound control do you have? you can also ctrl-alt-delete to check and see how much stuff is running in the background. Let me know what you find and then we can go from there. Oh and I went to Norton's site and found this fix. You may want to run it even though your AV prog says your clean. Oh and did you say you have both AV prog's running at the same time? If so, that could cause a system to slow down tremendously because of the resources it needs. Anyway post back with what you find out.

As a help to the Board I clicked on the link and got the Symantec Web site with full page. But the Error 004 was inserted. I could click and get FAQs. My Browser is AT&T RoadRunner. My cookies are enabled.
My AV's ar Norton Internet Security 2001.
I had NIS 2000, and when I upgraded to NIS 2001 it also upgraded my Noton Anti Virus 2000, which I also had. Now I have NIS/NAV 2001, all with the single NIS 2001 install.
With NIS 2001 a flashing Systray Icon immediately advises of a virus, ad, or hoax so that the user may immediately review his NIS Security and iden the culprit.

This is a nifty little program, with it you can disable anything you like, from starting up. Well worth looking at, and maybe downloading.

Okay, you're all gonna have a heart attack, but here's what was running when I hit ctrl+alt+del : Cmagent,Agserv9, Systray, Algoserv, Msmsgs, Fsscrctl,Tsystray, Fawgrd32, Findfast, Fa_gd32, Realplay, Avgcc32, Rtfixm32, Rnapp, Explorer, Juno web, character map, and whatever widows I had open. I don't have both AV systems running together, McAfee is turned off. I didn't even have the other AV software until last night. I did disable a lot of stuff from my systray, but it hasn't made a whole lot of difference. I guess I had about 13 or 14 things in there!

OK, try this : Close out of any running programs, click Start>Run and type in MSCONFIG. Go to the far right tab called Startup. Uncheck everything there except Rnapp, Explorer, Systray, ScanRegistry, and Load Power Profile (should be there twice). Reboot. Then look at your system resources - should see a HUGE difference.
