Hi....have you had a look in device manager to see if it's reporting any problems? You could also try reinstalling your driver from there.

P.S. My ball and chain is already in use on 4 year old Grandson

Windows 98 already has the necessary drivers for CD Drives, so you shouldn't need anything special, especially if it had worked before.

When you start the system, look closely at the first couple of startup screens and see if the Power On Self Test (POST) phase recognizes that you have a CD Drive attached - if it's not being recognized at this stage in startup, then Windows certainly won't be able to see it - it gets this type of configuration info from the BIOS which runs the POST.

Let us know if it's recognized on startup.

Does the green light flash on the front at bootup, and can you open the drawer? If it doesn't along with the other non recognitions...I think It's dead.

Here is another thought. If the BIOS is not seeing the CD Rom on post, it will usually say CD ROM DRIVE NONE. If this is what you are seeing, it does not necessarily mean that the drive is dead. If the system is no longer under waranty, crack the cover and check the IDE cables to your drive. Take them off and re-connect them. What can quite often happen, is that the drive can become unseated. By re-connecting you can solve this problem. If the results are the same after doing this, then the chances are that your drive is dead. PLEASE NOTE: If the system is still under waranty, DO NOT crack the cover. You could very well void the waranty by doing so. Take it to an authorized technician at the place of purchase.
