i wiped the harddrive partitioned it and formated and now i'm ready to install win98 it ran it's scan and said there were no errors on c or d so i continue with installing and i get this message:
setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot setup win98
if you have HPFS or NTFS you must create an MSDOS boot partition.

but i created a primary dos partition and an extended partition. i don't know what to do to fix this, can anyone tell me.

Put in a boot disk and go back to fdisk. Check your partition type. It should be fat32 or, at the very least, fat16. If it says NTFS, another file system or none you will need to re-partition. Win98 will not install on file systems other than fat32 or fat16.

It's probably already set that way, but while you are in FDISK also make sure that the primary partition is set is ACTIVE so that it will boot properly.
