You need to find a local friend to help you out. You are at the early novice level where you need some hands on instruction. You may want to get one of those windows 98 learner books. If this computer is used for anything serious, as in other than gaming, you need to proceed with caution. Before downloading from game sites, and before getting involved in instant messaging, make sure you have up to date virus protection and malware protection. Check out AVG antivirus and Spybot. There are links for those two freeware programs on this site under the Cybersafety forum.
When downloading, and you get the message prompting you to save to disk, you browse to a folder(directory) on your computers hard drive and, if necessary, make a sub-folder(directory) which you would then double click on to open and then click save. YOu need to make note of the path(location) of the directory you have saved to befory you click save so you can find it again. You generally then double click on the saved file in the location you saved it to to install the downloaded program. You may then have to tell it where to install it to. That was very general instructions that will not always apply.
Installing MSN Messenger could be accomplished the same way, I believe, but I don't use it.
