Has anyone had any experience with the windows installer engine? I'll try to make this as brief as I can: I went to Logitech's site to download the latest software for a wingman digital extreme joystick. It said before I could install it, I had to install the windows installer, which I saw is already on W2000 (I'm using 98SE). I followed that link, downloaded, and supposedly installed it. Now....I try to run the setup for the wingman software, it goes through it's paces, says to restart, and installation will automatically resume. On rebooting, I get first a dialog box for windows installer, which says "Preparing to install", then another one that says "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package" Turns out now, that those boxes pop up everytime I restart. I've deleted a file, msiexec.exe, which from what I found searching around, is the application for windows installer. I also unchecked "StartWMDriverWiz" from msconfig, which did eliminate those messages on startup. After deleting msiexec.exe, I thought maybe the startwmdriverwiz would not show up anymore in msconfig, but it still does.It feels like an itch, I know it's still in my system, and I'd like to fix it. Any thoughts?

My 1st thought is Start>Run>Regedit>OK, do a registry search for startwmdriverwiz, and either delete or modify that key.
I'm sure other help will be along in a sec., tho http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

I also am stumped by this,So yes maybe run regedit and search and delete anything to do with the installer, but what im worried about is there a installer already in place and what would happen if you uninstalled it.
I would be very careful or you might be reinstalling windows.
Im sure lynnm will be along shortly he will be able to tell you better then me.

I tried Zipulrich's sugg., and there is a key in HKey_Current_User,Software,Microsoft,Windows,Curre nt Version, Run. It's in there with a key for start wingman profiler, which is normal for wingman software. It points to "msiexec.exe /i "CWindowsWMTempWingmanDeviceWizard.msi" I looked, and there is no "WMTemp folder, and I've already deleted "msiexec.exe" from WindowsSystem. I agree, ironside, I'm not sure if there is something left of the installer. It almost "acts" like it's a wingman thing? Or is that the part of the wingman installation thing that windows installer started? Here is where I downloaded the installer from, if that's of any help: http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/sdks/platform/wininst.asp. Supposedly, there are components, ie. html help files, somewhere, but I can't seem to find anything. It's not in add/remove programs either. Msiexec.exe was an application, so maybe deleting that was all it took. I can't wait to see this post in the forum, it's gonna be a long one! But, hey, isn't this fun!? Thanks for the help so far, hopefully we'll figure it out. Perhaps, someone with Win2000, it's supposed to be a part of that??

hmm, that's odd. I went to the site, from my favorites, and doublechecked the address, and it's right. The plot thickens.....
